Eclipse HDR

Finally got a little more time to stack some images for an HDR of this glorious eclipse.

To be picky, there are still a few rough edges in this rendition which I'll work on in due course. Taming the remarkably bright inner corona is rather tricky.

Hope you enjoy the view

Very impressive.

Would love a few details of your exposures and how you controlled your camera for the eclipse (I used a clever piece of software to automate my Nikon for the Cairns Eclipse - just wondering what’s changed since then)

Thanks David.

I mulled long and hard over how to control the cameras prior to the eclipse. Unfortunately Eclipse Maestro
(or as far as I know anything else…& BTW happy to of what might work for future eclipses ) does not support the EOSR5, so I explored using my CamRanger2 to take an auto-exposure-bracket sequence.

This proved too slow, which then led me to using AEB within the camera as a custom mode then triggering the camera using an external intervalometer.

That said, my CamRanger2 proved to be invaluable for totally nailing focus using a nice big iPad screen before the partial phases. (as demonstrated by the solar granulation in the attached image).
I then disconnected it to allow unfettered intervalometer control.

The EOSR5 uses the new and remarkably fast CFExpress cards which can record 1800Mb/sec of data.
As result, you can sustain a burst of 20fps for several seconds to record Bailey’s Beads before buffering.

This allowed me to switch from manual (electronic shutter burst mode) to my 7 shot ½ f-stop bracket + mechanical shutter custom mode
and record over 400 frames in the R5 during the “mad-minute” of the eclipse. (My EOSRa on the Stowaway recorded about 300)

It all worked a treat.

You eclipse chasers had better make the most of the next few eclipses, as with the Moon moving away from us, it soon won't obscure the entire solar disc.

Oh, and by the way, superb image Peter.

Thanks for the rundown Peter - sounds like you were busy. Hope you had time to look at it too.
