Smart TV Not That Smart After All

Hi Guys, a short while ago Alice and I bought a new LG smart TV for the lounge room, and the one in the lounge was hung on the wall of another room to replace the old one there, both are LG smart TV's

However it seems that a smart TV isn't as smart as made out to be.

Sure it can do lots of good stuff, is crystal clear and sounds great, don't get me wrong we are happy with it.

We decided one day to record a program one the one in the other room on a USB drive, we have done this many times and it works well, but then we thought why not take that USB out of the older smart TV and play the program on our nice new, big one in the lounge room.

So we plug it in, turn it on and then a message comes up saying that it cannot play the program because it was not recorded on that TV.

Now in my book that is not very smart.

Leon

Hi Leon

That is how the "record to external USB Stick or HDD" is designed by the manufacturer. I suspect this is done to prevent mass copying, breach of copyright etc.

I think that some external devices can convert the TV specific recording format to a more global format, such as mpg, but that requires the appropriate HW and SW.

Cheers

Leon, I've downloaded the LG operating manual and their solution is to swap the TVs back again.

It's a copyright issue Leon so it's actually quite a smart tv .......for the manufacturer

Thanks people for your responses, it is not such a big deal, but swamping one USB from one TV to another isn't really rocket science.

Andrew thank you for your diligence in regard to investigating the problem so thorough, and coming to such a excellent solution, I actually didn't think of that easy fix
