M83

Hi all,

Had a crack at M83 a couple of weeks back. I really like this target, but shooting broadband from the inner west of Sydney is always problematic.
Additionally, still learning the ropes shooting with my 8 inch skywatcher newt - a bit more precision required than with my 80mm refractor.
Still, for about 4.5hrs total exposure, I'm fairly happy with this result.

Gear
OTA: Skywatcher 8 inch F5 newt, ZWO EAF, TS-GPU coma corrector
Mount: Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro
Camera: ZWO 533mc Pro, UV-IR Cut filter only
Processing: Processed in pixinsight

Thanks for looking

Michael

That’s a wonderful pic!! Incredible detail especially considering your location. Great work!

Yep, outstanding. I've been tempted by the 533 series of cameras as well because of the FoV. This is a great example of what it can do.

Hi Michael,
that's an excellent image of M83.
Did you use BlurXTerminator in your processing.

cheers
Allan

What a marvellous result Michael. What length subs were you using?

I love the 533, purchased about 2 years ago as my first astro-cam and still going strong. The smaller FOV has its uses.

I processed this a couple of weeks ago - but have been playing around with BlurXTerminator recently so very likely yes. I've noticed the difference can be dramatic with some images (particularly if there were issues with tracking or very poor seeing) but don't think the difference was that profound with this image. For comparison, I've done a quick re-process using my previous deconvolution method (EZ Processing Suite EZ Decon). I think the BlurXTerminator version is a touch sharper but it's very close.
Would also have used NoiseXTerminator (although I think that is less controversial?)

Thanks. I tend to use 60 second subs or shorter when imaging broadband. The downside is you end up with a lot of subs to stack, but fortunately with the relatively small image size of the 533, this isn't a big problem.

I don't think BlurX does as big a job for galaxies as say, LocalHistogramEqualization.

That's a lovely image - sharp detail, lots of colour and depth. Very nicely done.

OK - well there's not much difference with the original picture
so that's good.

Excellent M83
Super clean, good detail / resolution in the arms and core and colour is spot on
We’ll captured and processed
You have that 8” f5 dialed in perfectly I reckon, stars look fine
Yes, Sydney’s LP is a challenge for broadband targets but you have produced and excellent image with only 4 odd hours of data
Well done !!
Martin

PS: I’m retiring my 6” newt after 6 years and waiting for my 8” f5 Carbon fibre to arrive from Germany
Hopefully before Easter
Then progressing to Mono later in the year

Great image! I have the same target underway so please don't think I'm trying to compete if/when I post. I hope mine comes close.

Thanks Martin. Your success with your newts was part of the reason I decided to give it a crack when an affordable second hand one came up for sale. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with the 8" CF & mono. I'd like to give mono a crack but a bit hard for me to justify the expense at the moment.

Thanks Kevin! Looking forward to seeing your final image. And no competition here - I think its easy to be intimidated when posting online, part of the reason its taken me so long to post, but its fun just seeing the variety of interpreations/variation everyone manages on the same target.
