What – no tripod mounting socket on the binocular?

Hello,

Our 12x50 binocular doesn’t have a tripod mounting socket, so I modified a home made alt-az mount, (that I built a couple of years ago), to clamp the body of the 12x50’s.

The binocular is held in place by two slabs of high density foam that have been cut to fit the profile of the binocular body. The threaded centre post has been sheathed with self amalgamating tape so the threads don’t mark the binocular body.

A fluke of the design is that when the binocular is inserted and the correct inter-pupilary distance set, the gap between the two binocular tubes at the objective end is smaller than the diameter of the centre post which then acts as a safety stop if the binocular accidentally slips. In reality, the tapered body and the clamping action of the foam and thumb screw hold the 12x50’s securely even when looking at the zenith.

Cheers

Dennis

Very snazzy. (Now all you need is to fix yourself a parallelogram mount.)

Thanks Steve - I'll give you a cut of the profits, as my agent, if I ever make any money out of these.

Cheers
