Question ZoomBrowser EX

Does anyone know how to stop ZoomBrowser EX from showing after pictures have finished downloading from the Canon 350D?

I find ZoomBrowser EX useless to use and so always close it, but it chews computer resources while it generates thumbnails for images in it's directory tree before I even have the opportunity to close it. I'd prefer it just didn't open.

I'm sure there must be a setting somewhere...

Roger, I don't bother using the camera for download, I have a CF reader in my PC and take the images directly from the card. If you want to browse, XP doesn't need zoom browser to browse the camera, you can do it directly from explorer, even raw if you have the explorer plugin. If you don't want zoombrowser I suggest you uninstall it.

Tell me more about this plugin. As I understand your meaning, you can get thumbnails of camera raw files using explorer. This would be very useful.

The plugin (Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP) can be downloaded from Microsoft here.

Yes... I have the plugin and can use Windows Explorer, however I do find the simple download part of the canon software quite friendly and useful in comparison to explorer. It's just the rubbish that it starts up once completed downloading which is the problem

I just use Microsoft Picture downloader or whatever it's called. The standard one built into windows.

Just click "Advanced" and copy-paste the files from camera to harddrive, then delete off camera.

I've noticed this too. I was going to work around it by emptying all pictures from the Camera each night, so on restart it only has an empty folder to review and generate pictures for ...

It's a very handy plug-in and it's all I use (in conjunction with a card reader).
I don't bother with ZoomBrowser, I don't like it at all.

Not sure this will work but open your EOS Utilities program (installed with all other software from CD). Go to preferences, then right along the end tab to "linked Software" Mine has defaulted to Zoom Browser so I presume this is the right thing to do. Select None from the drop down list box and see if that works.

Good luck

I cant see why everyone seems to hate Zoombrowser so much, although i use others as well, like CS2, and Image Plus, I really like it, and find it very handy.

Leon,

For me, it behaves very inefficiently. It generates thumbnails to 2 folders deep as I navigate through folders, and won't let me continue navigating until it finishes generating he current set of thumbnails. For me that's a killer - I organise my files in folders of year then shooting session/subject/whatever, so if I navigate to the 2007 folder it tries to generate thumbnails for something like 50gig of files before I can move on. Over a network (mass storage device). And then it doesn't remember the thumbnails and does it all again when I come back next time.

I run on a 2.0 gighz laptop, so it's not new but isn't a snail either.

I just find it frustrating to use because it could do things so much better. I don't care about 2 levels of thumbnails.

I can't remember now, but I think it either doesn't have a non-thumbnail view or it always switches back to thumbnail view.

I find the added features and smarter working of the Digital Photo Professional program canon also installs much much better, much more efficient and more information available to me easily.

I suspect it's also a case of just what you get used to and learn to use. Everyone has their preferences for whatever reason, it's just annoying to be forced to have this open after every download from the camera.

I think suggestions from people here will solve my problem but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

Roger.

Roger,

I can see where you are coming from, and i can understand your frustration.
I suppose i just find it handy for my perticular needs, as i use it when testing images before i set the camera off on it's merry way to do 20 or 30 timed shots.

I will have the shoestring lead hooked to the camera, with an extension cable, but not to the lappy, as yet, then i take one image, let the camera do it's business, and when finished push the shoestring lead into the USB port.

It quickly downloads one image, so i can check for over exposure, drift, or anything really, I'll do this until I'm happy with the result.

Now that I've looked, and say yep, that will be OK, i set the camera to do it's bit, and take as many shots as I need.

Roger I probably do strange things when it comes to imaging, but at the end of the day I'm pretty happy with the results, so I suppose that is all that matters, It works for me.

How boring it would be if we did it all the same.

Leon
