Do I need an Electrician or an Exorcist

Noticed the kitchen light suddenly dim to half it luminance. It has one of those LED bayonet style bulbs because some Muppet politician banned incandescent bulbs. Any way I noted that when I turned the light switch off the light remained illuminated for a few seconds.

Do LED lights exhibit capacitance effect?

Is this a normal behavior for an LED in its death throes?

LED bulbs are actually quite complex electronics circuits.. so it can fail and that could be manifested in various ways.

Simply replace it with new one.

Most LEDs in the setup are fine and should last a very long time, unfortunately, the electronics are built to a price. The cost is usually early failure.

For what it’s worth- my new kitchen led lights keep glowing for a few seconds after I turn off the switch… I always just assumed it was normal…

Buy a new one. It will die completely within the next few days. LED bulbs normally last a very long time, but they are mass produced using cheap components and maybe 1 in 20 will not last even close to the anticipated 50,000 hours expected life.

Why would anyone want an incandescent bulb anyway ? They get a "X" on every evaluation criteria compared to LED bulbs.

For people that live off the grid, or in situations where a system or environment is dependent on batteries, like on boats etc, LED lighting has been "Life Changing"

This is perfectly normal. Unlike incandescent bulbs which run straight off the mains power @ ~240V, LED bulbs operate at very low voltages. There is internal circuitry to drop the voltage and drive the LED(s) which includes capacitors. These "can" sometimes take a second or 2 to discharge when you switch the light off.

Can we add “Some” to that. Not all LED bulbs are complex, Led filament bulbs are nothing more than a string or several strings of LEDS with no other components, they also emit little RFI which is a real bonus if you’re at all interested in the magic of HF radio.

Bingo.
LED's ain't LED's Sol.

LED's can have a long 50'000+ hour life if they're driven to spec. But most aren't. Not only do manufacturers save cost on the driver circuits, but they do on the LED die's too. They could for example use 40 LED dies at 20mA each, or 20 die's at 40mA each and get almost the same lumens, but at half the cost and much shorter life expectancy. Guess which is more attractive to the OEM bean counters.

You can get true efficient and long-lived LED's from Dubai if you're resourceful, watch the vid below for more on this:
https://youtu.be/klaJqofCsu4

Edit: The same was true for incandescent bulbs too, I had some very old Mirabella bulbs that were still working(before switching to LED), they were rated for 250v. Other brand bulbs used to die very quickly, often only rated for 220 or 230v.

LED are not good for eyes.
In 8 years I have to replace maybe 4 of downlights bulbs 12V / 50W out of 120 downlights.

I dont know if this is valid but it came from Google

A 2012 Spanish study found that LED radiation can cause irreversible damage to the retina. A 2019 report from the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) warned of the “phototoxic effects” of blue light exposure, including an increased risk for age-related macular degeneration.9 Aug 2019

But I wonder..was the study commissioned by a candle manufacturer?

What does not kill you makes you stronger ..mm it doesnt actually but led light marketing need to build on that approach.

Thanks Blindman I did not know. Hard to believe but true.

TV screens ruin your eyes .when I was 13 before TV my eyes were perfect but now not so good clearly due to TV.

Alex

I have come inside to avoid exposure to the blue in the sky...

Thank you for that .... I tend not to worry about any of these things mainly because so many if these fear things is a money maker for someone and I am so lucky nothing can ever happen to me...I dare not buy a lottery ticket as I would win and just have to worry about spending it...I dont know if you read this in my observstory thread...but I was worried about the rain sinking my boat..well it did but on top of my jetty so that was pretty lucky..but today I go down and it has slid back into the water ( but on the other side of the jetty) having drained most of the water out..now what are the chances...
Anyways who are these people saying stuff about LEDs...like whats their game who is paying them? Are they credible? There are so many liars around so I like to know who I am listening to...if he is so clever why isnt he rich and if he is rich how come he got that money ..did he pay tax...I expect you have looked into it are they to be believed?

Led bad for eyes I expect originated with some clickbait fake news headline, never seen it reported citing a study source either. So it the advertising sector profiting off such crap, and people need to look at the research themselves and read the report or article in full, not just the headline and making stuff up from that. Years ago I was on facebook but no longer, when a friend forwarded me a fast growing thread regarding sausages causing cancer it was full of people panicing but i actually read the originating article which cited a WHO report which i then looked at and pointed out to the thread that the study was restricted to a mall set of people with an existing rare disease and they were put on a diet of like 4 sausages for every breakfast over a long term and the finding showed around 5% increase risk of one type of cancer only within their group of people with an existing rare disease, the control were otherwise healthy normal people and they showed NO increase risk of any cancer and when you look at the numbers it equates to one extra person developing cancer amoung a group of people with a rare disease with a population larger than has ever existed having this disease, so realistically it means you and nobody you know will get cancer from sausages because you just dont anyone with this rare disease. So its a non story. The original study report did find the 5% increase within the the trvial bounds and that fine, they nor the WHO attributed any sort of risk for the general public beyond the heart disease risks from eating lots of sausages so often(and cited those papers). The thread just died after I pointed out the truth of what was published.People I guess want to be the center of attention being doomsayers which is easier to do than do anything constructive or beneficial and maybe they expect to get rich being an influencer. I wouldn’t be surprised if this LED thing came from someone testing cheap chinese (ie crap quality) LEDs.

***Just deleted a large post but looked back through the thread an Simon already covered what I was going to post but hes said it better.*****

So I’ll stop here.

It is so good to see you around Steve and thanks for your contribution.

You would know about confirmation bias I expect which should be taught day one in school and revised every year.

Folk believe what they want without questioning it...and so if you said Joe or Donald eat unborn children one half would believe it about the guy they hate....well maybe a little less ...but I had a battle with the anti vax brigade around Tabulam and not one single concern they came up with was valid..not one... and the outright lies these poor folk were told and accepted was just unbelievable and yet simple research would show up the lie..to this day I still have not uncovered a concern that is not referrenced on the government web site..its not just the anti vax minority that falls for confirmation bias ...and so you need to question everything..recently one of the pollies was going on about the countries debt...I looked it up..his claim was over double the actual number but no doubt his supporters quote his lie.
