A few widefield shots on holidays

Hi all again,...

Have been away on a nice holiday into outback S.A for the last few weeks and only got back the other day.
Took my new sigma 17-70mm and my canon 300d away as well for a good workout.
Saw lots of amazing places etc and filled the 1gig mem card up too quickly.
Enjoyed Woomera, Cooperpedy Lake Eyre and the Flinders before going to Broken Hill and Dubbo`s western plains Zoo...
Very happy with the lense for both day and night photography....

Anyways here are a couple of night shots with the sigma 17-70mm lense.

First one is on a salt pan near Kimba whilst the moon was rising behind me.
30 sec iso 800 at 17mm f/3.
Next is a 60 sec shot in the flinders ranges..iso 800 at 17mm and f/3.
The last is a 6 min shot also in the flinders at iso 400 at 17mm and f/5
boy the sky was soo dark right down to the horizon!!..

No sign of light pollution anywhere....
Couldn`t see walking back to camp at all except with my little torch.. even after being in the dark for a hour..
Back home again and back too all this low cloud and murk!...lol

That 17-70 sigma is a keeper, that's for sure. I just recommended it to John Bambury for his new 400D.

Thanks Mick, Nick, Louie, Andrew and Ric for the comments. They are just quick snap shots with my little tripod. Next time I hope to have a barn door tracker made up for some guided shots. Had the moon up most of the time but towards the end of our holiday there were a few clear dark nights so I couldn`t resist a pic or two..!! Can`t wait for some clear nights back home to get some deep widefield shots with the sigma!!

glad you made it safely back from the mythical deepest darkest SA Gary! it is a dark sky connoisseur's delight for sure - pity about the elevation opportunities

we've seen some freaky atmospheric sights near the flinders at times. but I have seen equally amazing skies on occasion in the SE, maybe even better.
wheres the daylight shots of flinders!?

..good to be back and eager to get some clear weather here at home...very dark skies in the outback but that moon made a dent most nights with only a few real clear nights over 2 weeks..

Thanks Kearn...there was only one night in the flinders which was real nice...hence the pics I posted...Did take a few day shots but not as many as I should have...love that country up there!!!!!
Here`s a pic from the same spot I did the star pics but facing more to the west..
