Is it just me??

OK I am now what some folk call old and I expect perhaps less tolerant and maybe even grumpy..well I dont see that of myself, certainly I feel I am positive and cheerful but must concede that 74 is indeed old.

Yet I seem to notice there are more silly people than ever before. I always thought I was the one who was out there, primarily because of my obsession with trying to work out how gravity worked, although I never claimed to have a theory but only " an idea"...( And yes I know all about General Relativity).

But it seems that outside of hospital and this place finding a logical rational person is a big ask.

So one friend on hearing that my carer had her covid shot became alarmed and told her that it makes your blood magnetic and tried to demonstrate by holding a fork up to my carers arm to show it would stick there.
The fact a fork does not respond to a magnet did not enter her mind. But a good friend had it happen...mmmm..and so my carer in her eyes was the exception cause it happened to a friend.

AND she is not the only one who come out with this sort of nonsense...what has happened to thinking things thru?

What is so hard to understand that if you make a claim you need evidence...no evidence and a belief is not worth the hot air expended to utter it...

So am I just unlucky to be encountering an excess of these people or can you, for the purpose of making an interesting thread, tell us of something similar...flat Earth stories will be welcome.

Alex

She probably got that nutty theory off social media. The internet is full of alleged experts spouting all sorts of rubbish. They love a platform to spread their words, give them Facebook, Instagram, Utube, etc and they can reach millions very quickly. Just because something is said in that media dies not make it true. But people are gullible. And of course you live in the Anti-vax capital of Australia.

Hmmmmm.... Never say never I say

I suspect you may be thinking of stainless steel, which yes and no is "not magnetic", or better said as "not that magnetic" but even it, depending on its grade, impurities and how it has been processed even how it's used/work hardened, can be/is attracted to a magnet especially the stronger Neodymium types.

I've noticed some high grade 316 types or 18/10 tend to be better at not being attracted to magnets, but not always ....
never say never

Anyway Alex ... I can't help with an opinion on the lady you spoke to, but atleast I gave you a reason to go and play around in your kitchen drawers with a magnet or 2.

Best

After my Jab, whenever I walk past the power pole on the corner, the transformer explodes and walking near cars sets off their alarms.

It is a pity that more people are not as exact as we must all benefit from more detailed correct information..I am of course assuming all that you wrote is correct but if after my research, that I will conduct to check upon all you say, I find you are not on the money I will of course be back to point out any thing that does not agree with my research and I expect at that point we can review the matter more thougherly.
I have already checked all the forks in the house and next shop will take a magnet so I test any forks I see on display..this should reduce the probability ...however certainly a search on google is called for as I expect forks would have been predominately magnetic before stainless steel came into regular use.

I think a big part of the problem is topics such as physics critical thinking, propaganda, etc are reserved for the advanced classes that not every student takes when they go through high school. Without that little voice in their head asking questions like 'Am I putting to much weight in this personal anecdote on Twitter or Facebook?' or 'Maybe I should listen to this doctor, they might know more than aunt June." It's easy to be persuaded by the vocal minority. Admittedly that doesn't explain antivax nurses.

I think that you are drawing these people to you Alex, so you can dispense some common sense and truth, to provide them with an alternate view that has some substance behind it, compared to what appears to be wishful, fanciful thinking.

You will likely never convert them, but at least you put a marker in the ground.

What really worries me, is how widespread and entrenched this wishful, fanciful thinking has become.

What has "gone wrong" on such a massive scale?

Cheers

I find that I can go anywhere since my jab(s) that the 5G signal is strong in me. I have a friend who is anti-vax and a conspiracy follower so I have fun there. One of his much admired items is the "free energy" items and the perpetual motion items. When I say perpetual motion is a physics improbability he counters with 'I didn't study physics so I have an open mind'
Same story with the free energy and the restore car batteries to new with this simple trick type items. Strangely he does believe the earth is round but also that no man has ever landed on the moon.
Oh well it would be a boring world if we all were the same.

My problem is, by virtue of time in law and real estate is I am a patient "good" listener and folk certainly do take to me..I told this before but at the pub and this lady who I quiet like actually talked for 20 or 30 minutes with me just saying "really" " then what happened" " I like that" etc and she finally slowed down and said " Alex you know what I really like about you..you are a wonderful conversationalist". She wanted to go halves in my boat and had nice plans but I got delayed up North for quiet a while.
She is ok. But there is another where after the first minute I should have ignored her as she haunts me to this day.
In the pubs in Parramatta they called me father confessor because everyone would tell me their secrets...I must look as if I care..well unfortunately I do and there are those who live for the moment they find someone like me..main reason I dont go out these days is I am sick of hearing everyones secrets and problems.

No, it is not just you, it is very common today. Not only silly but just simply don’t care. I blame social media, only for the younger ones, who knows for the older ones and people are loosing the human contact and basic values or something along those lines. However, I refuse to tit for tat and try to educate instead.

Hi Alex

A good magnet (a reasonable size Neodymium type) will sort it out. Google... yeah maybe, but there's no substitute for experiment or self-experience in terms of learning and indeed remembering something for a long time.

With a very strong neodymium magnet you can even feel effects with copper and aluminium. Not obvious attractive effects, but a sense almost like viscous damping, like trying to stir a spoon in something thick, not quite as thick as honey, but that sort of thing when you move the object near the magnet and vice-versa. Infact Copper and Aluminium are known as paramagnetic materials and demonstrate these less well known weak and sometimes not so weak, effects.

I once made a device to demonstrate this strange viscous damping/braking effect by using a large thick Aluminium hexagonal block. The block was solid aluminium hexagonal section about 100mm across the flats and about 150mm in length, with a 25mm hole drilled at its centre all the way through the 150mm length. I then took 2 stacked neodymium magnets and dropped them through the 150mm long 25mm diameter hole with the 150mm long hole oriented vertically. The magnets fell through VERY SLOWLY as if defying gravity (one of your favourite subjects no less ). You need to see it to really appreciate it. It is the result of the magnet falling under the influence of gravity, generating a moving magnetic field and thereby generating eddy currents in the nearby aluminium and in turn acting to dynamically brake (slow) the moving magnet, so that it falls MUCH SLOWER than you'd expect.

I will see if I can find that Aluminium Hex Block and redo the experiment with video. It will take a while and hunt in the garage.

Best
JA

Many years ago, I was pondering people's inherent stupidity with my father...

His response "90% of the population are just making up numbers" I was horrified!!

Many years on now, I realise how wrong he was....

It's more like 98%!!
