Talk by Mike Salway

The Astronomical Society of NSW hold regular meetings, usually twice a month, on Fridays.

This Friday's talk (2 March) is by Mike Salway on planetary imaging and processing with a Dobsonian telescope.

ASNSW meetings start at 8.00pm and are held at the Epping Creative Centre at 26 Stanley Road, Epping. The Epping Creative Centre is situated in Dence Park, which is just off Epping Road and about 1km from Epping Station. Ample parking and good facilities are available for all meetings.

Abstract: Mike Salway (www.iceinspace.com.au) began imaging with a 10" GSO dobsonian telescope about 18 months ago, using budget afocal and webcam techniques - proving that astrophotography with an undriven dob is possible. He's now tracking his dob using an EQ platform, and is doing RGB imaging with a sensitive high-speed webcam and is now recognised as one of Australia's top planetary imagers.
Mike has always shared his knowledge and techniques, enabling others to benefit from his experience. Mike will talk about his evolution in planetary imaging, factors that influence hi-resolution planetary imaging, and share his techniques for capture and processing.

Mike has just recently addressed (last week) our club, the Macarthur Astronomical Society on the very same issue, and he did a great job.

How does the guy do it........IIS to operate and manage, a family with 3 youngsters, early morning sessions with Jupiter, organising astro-camps, processing AVIs plus a plethora of other behind the scenes IIS stuff that would probably make our hair curl if we knew about it. Oh, and not forgetting work! Or sleep!

Cheers

Hmmmm.

I have Friday off from work again this week, what with the AFL taking over our Manuka Oval offices for the weekend game between the Swans and Richmond.

Might be good to take a drive to Sydney.

Is it open to the general public or is it just a ASNSW members thing?

Epping is the next door suburb when I am in Sydney. Might see you there maybe Matt I am going to try and pop it and listen to their speaker for the night particularly as they can get someone of Mikes high calibre he is going to be a hard act to follow ..seriously unless they have one of the big gun astro photographers or soft ware specialists..all from here who are they left with. Mike you had better learn deep sky and all associated softeware and get a presentation ready.. pick up the kids uniforms, wash the car etc er one for that in the coming week . Find a busy man if you want something done because he is the only one who will have the time to help . Keep on it Mike I see you as the next Patrick Moore because in a very short time you have been responsible for popularising our magnificient hobby . We need heros like you I mean that from the bottom of my heart . Go for it mate

Be a pleasure to catch up with you, Alex. If I can make it along.

Just been told the girlfriend has family visiting from Perth this weekend.

They probably wouldn't notice if I disappeared for a few hours

I have problems developing here that may stop me getting down in time, off to work on them now. In any event I wish Mike all the best for the evening.

Great talk last night Mike. As a newcomer to the hobby it was extremely useful to hear about your journey and how you've learnt to take such great photos. You've given me a lot of inspiration. Really appreciate your time last night.

Hi Greg
Thanks for your feedback! I really enjoyed giving the talk. It was great meeting you and the other ASNSW members that were there.

Thanks to Geoff and the rest of the ASNSW for inviting me to come to talk, and for the great Thai dinner beforehand! Very nice!

Thank you Mike for offering your time to do a talk for the NAS this month.
Greatly appreciated.
Not sure if we'll be able to do the 'dinner' but 'supper' will be provied by the NAS after the meeting and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. There are some good cooks at the NAS!
