Eta Carina Piggyback

Seems to be a popular choice at the moment.

As luck would have it, it was a lovely night last night so I thought I'd play around with DSLR Focus a bit in piggy back mode to see how close I could get to focused manually adjusting the focus on the camera.

For those who've not heard of it DSLR Focus is designed to assist in prime focus focus Especially if you have an electronic microfocuser attached. Unfortuantely I'm still having difficulties with my wedge for the LX200 so I piggybacked on my Eq mounted refractor and manually guided with a reticle.

Detail
Canon 300D with hack using mirror lock
200mm FL (not happy with this lense. Gives a lot of flaring)
f/5.6
ISO 1600 3X 240 Sec
Piggyback on HD-102EQ manually guided in RA only
Dark subtracted in PS
Stacked in Reg3, not adjustments
Levels, curves, contrast in PS

Conclusion: I need a better lens otherwise with practice I feel it would be of great use even doing piggyback work

Darn, I have just come in from trying the new mount, and one that I tried was Eta too. I also did LMC, and the SMC, and also Antares/M4 area.
All with the Nikkor 300mm, and D100.
I'll flick them through Photoshop and post it here.
The weather looks good for next weekend, and without any means of autoguiding it looks like piggyback for me as well.

OK, as always they look better in the little window thingie on the back. Minimal, and I mean a quick swipe of levels, and downsize to keep Mike happy.
D100, 300 Nikkor @f4.5, 300secs, at ISO1000.

And since you asked, the LMC, same details, and same quick and dirty Photoshopping.
Both unguided, which is good, cos it means my polar alignment isn't too far off.

Good chance here to do a camera and lense comparison Gary. Here's my my original stack unprocessed except for a quick levels like yours and resizing

Great shots guys! I'm going to have to get myself a piggy-back adaptor. What do you think the max exposure would be for a Nikon D70 with a 200mm lens piggy backed on an LX90 in alt-az before field rotation would become apparent. Apparently it's about 30 secs at prime focus (2000mm), so at 200mm (one-tenth) would that mean ten times the exposure (about 300 secs)?

No chance Wayne
This attachment is FL 70 mm ISO800 exp 12sec, piggyback to Alt/Az LX200. As you can plenty of rotation. Mind you this is near the meridian on the eliptical so rotation apparently happens pretty quickly here. Check out this site for more detail. Its a great site by a great astrophotographer. http://www.allaboutastro.com/Article...drotation.html

OK, I cracked the whip, and got about 5 minutes out of the processing slave this morning. Photoshop levels, but by him ot me.
Yes Mike hope it is kind both sides of the ditch.
He did the LMC as well, but I will leave that one out.

Sorry wayne. made a mistake in the above figures for rotation. There was a 2X teleconverter invovled so double the F/ration and Focal length and it was 120 sec not 12 sec (sorry it was a big day yesterday)

BTW Gary are you dragging the slave along with you. I'd love to meet and chat with him. How big is he? would I be able to get him in under the 20kg baggage limit when I leave Oh and I hope you don't mind Gary but your post of LMC from a couple of weeks ago has been pinched and has been my desktop theme since you posted it. The one above is good, but the first one was great.

Wayne I'm not familiar with the mounting setup of the LX90. Is there a way you can polar align the way the ETX's do? I know its no good for piggyback but can you use a field derotator at all for primefocus with an LX90. There was one for sale around her a while ago.

Hi Paul,
yes the slave will be there, but no he isn't suitable for export. He requires his mother to look after him, cook his meals, make his bed, and all that stuff. He is looking forward to the weekend, and the interchange of ideas etc.
I am flattered that the LMC is good enough.
Gary
