I just get notified by FireFox once it has decided there is an updated, downloaded it and installed it. Does that not happen to everyone?

depends on if theyve auto update enabled or not i dont

Apparently 1.5 is not supported at the end of April 07. So those still running 1.5 are advised to update to 2.x
