Centaurus A 24.5 hours

This is a combination of 12 hours of AP RHA 305mm F3.9 and CDK17 F6.8 data.

The shelled structure of Centaurus A is showing up with an interesting ring around it.

I‘m afraid you’ve killed it a bit with noise reduction there Greg. Have a look at the the dust lanes :/

I've done another version. I shouldn't've done a global noise reduction and now the central lane is quite sharp.

Greg.

Nice work Greg,
I think it's showing that ring as well in the pic from Rolf Olsen

Centaurus A Extreme Deep Field - 130 Hours - Sep 2019.

Man, you have set the bar pretty high to match that Image.

Cheers Colin. Thanks for pointing it out. I was concentrated on getting as much of this structure out and missed that.

Yes that is the landmark image. Stunning. There are lots of strange photos of this galaxy from NASA and others. It has a very weird structure.

That dark ring is astonishing. Superbly done. I've not seen it in our attempts and it's obviously very difficult to show. I can see it in Rolf Olsen's image.

Best,
Mike

Hi Greg. That's the best image I've seen of 5128. Didn't know about the ring! Do you know if it is a really a ring or is it a spherical "shell" ? So much in this detail in this image. Love it. Not expert myself but I know what I like
Cheers, Richard

Thanks Marc. 17 inch aperture and a dark site are a good combo.

Best,

Yes it surprised me as well. Rolf's image is super deep and showing the shell structure that David Malins film slides showed years ago.

I think it simply requires lots of exposure.

Thanks Suavi. Its hard to know what to invest the imaging time on. Its often quite precious between work, clouds, seeing, gear issues and the fact that some images don't turn out that well.

Greg.

I think it's there because of a spherical shell.
It's so thin and dim that the more mass that is
observed at the edge from our perspective makes
it look like a ring.
I think from Rolf's picture there is more than one.
The question is - what could cause that?

cheers
Allan

Thanks very much JA. I may add even more data to it. It would be nice to take a lot of Ha and try to tease out the jet more clearly.

Greg.
