More widefields

Being restricted to shoot from home in Bortle 6 skies, I'm just having fun shooting something whenever the clouds aren't there. These were shot earlier in the week before all this rain and cloudy weather rolled in. Both with the modded Canon 550d. M83 with the Tamron 500mm mirror lens mounted on the Heq5 ( a crop of the full widefield version also ) and the best I could extract with light polluted skies of Rho Ophiuchi using a 135mm lens on a Nano Tracker. Both shots less than 50 mins each total exposure. Looking forward to shooting the latter from dark skies some time this year.

Hi Michael,

Good to see you taking advantage of any chance you get even if it has to be under some light polluted skies.

How are you mounting the 500mm tamaron ? It looks like you’re getting a little bit of movement there. Rho oph looks good. I’ve wanted to do this one for a while but I’ve never got around to it.

Well done

Ryan

That looks like a really nice lens.

Thanks Ryan, yeah the stars are a bit wonky on the one shot with the mirror lens. Not sure whether it was holding focus. They're a bit temperamental and nailing the focus is tricky. I don't think the camera and lens were moving in the saddle as I was using a short dovetail bar to mount the camera on and it was locked in pretty tight. Probably more of a lens aberration inherent with these type of lenses. I'll also check my subs, there may have been a few rogue ones with trailing I didn't discard.

The 135mm is an old Pentax f3.5 which is sharp but I have to stop it down to about f8 to eliminate some of the CA. The lens coatings may not be as efficient as they were when the lens was new. It's about 35 yrs old.

Very nice wide field shots and an new lense to check out. I am wondering if those blurs on the stars are a tiny left over mirror movement or vibration from taking the shots quickly after each other.
