1st Registax 4 question

OK.

So I've made the switch to Registax 4 due to the nature of the AVIs produced by my DMK.

I printed out the R4 User Manual and went along with the fast processing run using multiple points (starts on Page 3) and I've already hit a wall.

Everything was going great processing an uncompressed AVI of Saturn. I was using 2 alignment points.

I got up to step 7.

My 2 alignment points had been processed, but then the window marked "Initial alignment running point #1" didn't come up on the screen as per step 8.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

No idea whatsoever, but does it work with just the one alignment point?

Gaz.

I'm really trying to get the hang of MAP. Otherwise I may as well just use V3

And I really want to figure out why I can't get this window to come up.

OK. Cool. Have fixed it.

Was definitely a software bug.

After all else failed, I completely removed and reinstalled R4 and voila!!!!

The graph is back and the prog is doing what it should.

Weird, though.

So...

Here's the result of a run through R4 using MAP. (3 alignment points)

Not as bad as some other "Picasso" portraits I've ended up with using this alignment technique, but still a good demo of the probs I have in using it.

Despite the alignment problems this shows promise, since last night's seeing was very ordinary.

You're doing so much better than me Matt - I've never got MAPs working on planetary images yet, without the appearance of the post modernist abstract jagged image shearing effects between alignment regions.

Cheers

Hi Matt,

with the joining of the multiple alignment points I had a similar issue. No matter what I did I could not get rid of them. Then finally someone owed up over the last days or so and suggested that you have to feather 3-5 PER alignment point.

So for 3 alignment points try a feather of 12. Has just worked for me, so would be interested to see how you go.

Good luck with R4.

John.

Mate – I’ve tried feathers, and even gone as far as wearing cow hide hats, pig skin chaps and cotton drill T-shirts and no matter what gear or adornments I wear when processing in R4, I still can’t get rid of those jagged edges…

Cheers

Planetary is not really what MAP is about, it's ostensibly for lunar shots where the image is full screen. It will always struggle with this sort of pic.

I don't agree at all. There's no reason R4 should not align planetary pics with MAP processing any worse than it can align lunar pics with MAP processing.

The only thing I can suggest is post a screenshot at each stage during registax processing, so I can see what your options are. I can then post the same during my processing and look for any differences.

I use MAP processing on planets all the time (Saturn and Jupiter) and I never get those jagged edges.

Yeah Mike - but you use magic and a 5x barlow so your image scale is huge and your focus is scary...

This is only a guess, but what alignment size are you using Matt? I found I had problems if I used too big an alignment box. The other side of the coin is if you use a small alignment box then your image needs to be pretty stable and not wobble around the screen too much to get the best from it.
