Yes, I also have had this. Trying to decide whether to just pay for the Win10 'service' or get a whole new sytem.
I'm stuck in the same boat as well, having to look at replacing 2 systems.
My 2012 Toshiba netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit, can't be downgraded to Win10. Local PC shop checked to see if it could be downgraded to Win10. No dice. So I'll likely have to put Linux on it to keep it usable.
I suspect trying to install Win10 on my 2008 Lenovo 3000 series notebook, running Windows 7 Professional 64bit, will also fail. I used this notebook as a Windows Insider to test preview versions of Win10, before Win10 was officially inflicted on the generic public.
I turned off windows updates soon after I installed win 7 ultimate, updates kept screwing up my system. Nearly 10 years now without issue and as stable and fast as the day I installed. I do update some programs like the antivirus. (but skip the included win updates). I really do need to hunt down a new motherboard that still supports win7 for when this one packs it in and I need to rebuild. If you have the win7 disc you always have the option of installing it as a virtual machine on win10. I have done that on my win8 laptop so I can still use some of my old legacy software that doesn't have win 10 support.

Useful, if you have a powerful enough system.
My Lenovo notebook is nowhere near capable enough to consider trying that.
And even if you did set up a VM, wouldn't you still run into the Win7 support being nuked in 2020 problem?
Apparently win 7 will install in intel systems up to and including gen6. Plenty of main boards and processors for DIY available but complete new systems are hard to find.
This is their way of absolution for no more updates.

Yes the final update will probably do the trick.....I'd defiantly be wary of the final updates, after all the ones still using win 7 didn't play the forced (automatic) upgrade to win 10.

I have two Windows 7 Netbooks that I did the free Windows 10 upgrade to, but then had to reverse the updates as the Netbooks just didn't work properly.
I have one Windows 7 Computer that I upgraded to Windows 10, and that worked fine for a while. Then after numerous updates, it started stuffing up, using nearly 100% of the CPU all the time trying to open a system file. None of the eight recommendations to fix the problem that Google threw up worked. So I System Restored it to an earlier date when it did work (and undid the updates). Then it updated several times with all being fine, until the same 100% CPU problem came back again, where I did a System Restore to an earlier time to get it to work again.
Given my experience, I wouldn't be spending any money on a Windows 10 Upgrade unless the computer was relatively new, made a year or so before Windows 10 was introduced.
Still running one XP machine and one Vista (gulp) machine. They do NOT stop working once the updates/support stops. Just keep using them! Much ado about nothing.

Just go to services and disable windows updates. Do this for series 7 intel cpu's too to stop popups.
I still got an xp machine in the garage recording security cameras.
The security card only has xp drivers.
The TV machine here runs win7 just for media center. Never been updated.
All the other boxes are win10. It works fine. Obsolete software is the issue. Suck it up or get an apple.

Agreed, and most of the bugs in the early releases from a couple years back have been taken care of. I have it running on numerous machines all with different configurations/generation hardware (within the last 5 years). In my experience it runs just as smooth, if not better than Win 7. The trick is to turn off all of the garbage. There's so many unnecessary settings turned on by default during installation that hinder performance.
