14 hours without power

We had a major blackout in our area yesterday afternoon and was without power all night.
That's the fourth day in a row we've had blackouts, but this was the longest outage of all.
Gotta hand it to the emergency personnel that work around the clock in all sorts of weather conditions to get things back to normal.
Power was restored 9.30 this morning.
Not easy to do without power for any length of time that's for sure.
Last night was mayhem here, trying to organize 8 young children, bathe, feed and settle down before bed is all that much harder when there's no power.

I was online at the time of the failure but luckily I have a small UPS for my computer to power things down safely until power's restored. I highly recommend these units, they help prevent HD/system being corrupt by power fluctuations.
I bought a 1000w unit from Jaycar for $199 that uses two 12v SLA's (easily replaceable).
A must have device IMO.

Now to catch up on all the posts.......

One of the best ancilliary devices on can buy for a computer, Andrew.

I have an oldish one attached to my business computer but not to the one I'm using for this post. While the UPS I do have does not have shutdown facilities it does give me the chance to shut the computer down manually before things go belly up.

For the short duration outages from which I tend to suffer (as no doubt most people do) it's fantastic. One day I'll purchase one of the later models with the built-in shutdown facility and using a USB port to do it.

So, to your recommendation I add five stars.

Hey that's cheap. My last UPS blew up 6 months ago. Literally. Fire and everything. I was more than a little happy I was at home when it burst into flames. Think I'll buy that today. I feel I'm over the UPS trauma now

Sorry to hear about the power problems but thanks for the UPS reminder

Luckily I'm empty atm Geoff.

Wow Terry a fire !

I was sick of my old UPS which insisted I replace it's battery with their own proprietary battery or else it wouldn't work.

This one from Jaycar uses common SLA's (which BTW can be stored in any orientation)

The beauty of it is that they show you in the instructions how to wire up extra SLAs for a longer runtime period, so I'm thinking maybe a few in parallel will give me heaps of time to run my system.

Which is what I've just plugged into the wall right now If this one doesn't burst into flames, I'll be happy. If it does, bring some chickens over and we'll have a bbq over the open flames of the ex-house.

Yes! It's actually cheaper sometimes to go and buy those cordless drill "specials" and remove the battery, than it is buying a battery on it's own. The world's gone crazy.

We'll all have to get used to it if the 'solar power' folks get their way.

Oops. sorry, I'm a refugee from another thread, won't say any more!
