Sticky problem

Hi all,

After not using my Dob for about a week I ventured into my observatory yesterday and my heart dropped to the floor.

The double sided sticky tape that was holding my Telrad on the scope had come unstuck and dropped the poor thing onto my cement. The good hing is that the cement had a roll of carpet on it at the right place so the telrad was saved. I think. I haven't actually tested it yet to see.

I am going to bolt it to my scope now, don't trust the tape anymore.

Double sided tape is OK if you get the right brand, and if the surface is sound (and dry) underneath. 3M brand double sided tape is good, I bought a 50 metre roll years ago and it still works well despite having travelled around in my van for the past 13 years, but I would still screw it as well.

No problems with the double sided tape on mine either, apart from looking brown and old. BUT I dont leave the telrads on the scopes either. I pack them away in their foam lined boxes. That's like leaving your ep in the focuser.

I've not had any problem with the double sided tape...so far so good...

I have knocked the telrad off the base (long story) but even then, the tape held the base on firmly...

Might be the way I painted the tube then, wasn't a smooth finish, I sort of dabbed the paint. Might be the cause.

How hot does your observatory get Andrew? Any rise in temp will soften the adhesive to some extent.

Im not game to bolt my Rigel Quikfinder to my dob as it stands so high off the ota im certain that one day I would knock it and snap it off. I have knocked it before and just torn the base off the double sided tape. Much cheaper to replace!
