That's noise alright, maybe a heap of shorter expo's at lower ISO would help, pretty colours though.

yeah.. have done... I have dark frames to remove most of this too, but that's not the point...

600? That's for wimps 2,400 seconds, now that's more fun

Seriously though - 600 is quite common for me, it's only vary occasionally it's worth me going to 40 minutes (2,400) with digital. And that's with the SBIG so noise isn't such an issue, I don't think I'd try 2,400 with the Canon

I guess everyone has their own recipe for disaster ... err, I mean good images.

Yep, she's a common problem this time of year, I too am thinking I will wait until winter arrives.
Even with the ST8 I am having trouble getting the temp down.

Hows this for a long exposure. A SINGLE 1 hour image of SNR RCW 103 thru the 7 Nm HA filter last year, a dark was also done and subtracted.
What amazes me is that DSLRs can operate at all at room temp. It goes to show if they could be cooled down to same temps as dedicated astro cameras theyed eat them for breakfast regarding dark noise.,

Readnoise = 5 e- RMS
Noise in 900 sec exposure @ 31C = 34 e- RMS, dark current = 0.5 pAcm2
Noise in 900 sec exposure @ 6 C = 6 e- RMS, dark current ~ 0.01 pAcm2
For comparision STL-11000M has claimed dark current of 0.1 pAcm2 @ 0 C

Now imagine if the DSLR can be cooled, like this one

It might be nice to see the same pic with dark noise removed.
I agree about the 10 mins. I've done 10 min in summer with no problems, so I'm looking forward to 20 min winter exposures.
