I thought I'd have a go at something completely different this time.
It was full moon on friday night so why not give it a go.
I could only see a few stars esp when i nearly blinded myself as i had a quick look at the moon!!!
I tried a few different length subs but in the the end I put every sub, dark, bias, and flats into DSS and let it do its thing.
Its got a red cast but all my images do because of the camera mod.
Not to sure if im setting the W/B right but im using .raw so it should be ok with auto but everything had red cast on it even the flats.
Anyway ill try and get some colour out of the stars.
Not sure how to do it but ill try more subs.

Canon 450d moded
50x 15 sec
50 x 30 sec
50 x 60 sec
Darks, Flats and bias subtracted.
Stacked in DSS
Processed in Photoshop.

Nailed the focus and a good dynamic range. Little red at the moment. You might be able to colour balance that in software.

I know theres a real red cast. I've never had as much before.
Normally my images look a bit red coming out of DSS and after stretching and sharpening ive never needed to colour balance but I've been doing orion etc which have a fair bit of red anyway.
My flats have a real red tinge to them, maybe thats the problem.
I'm not sure if i have to W/B before I image or not.
Someone here might be able to help.
Also i sympathize with people who image in the cities.
It must be like a full moon all the time!!!.
Im pretty lucky here to have to have virtually no light pollution.

Heres one of my flats plus histogram.
Not sure if i need to colour balance everything before i stack or after?

Maybe the heat and amp glow ads up with a DSLR. Not sure if the colour in the flat will affect your subs but I'd say it wouldn't. Someone else might chime in on this one.

You can easily rebalance your histogram in PS or with the raw file.

With the camera mod on the 450d all images taken (even terrestrial shots) have a red cast unless i do a custom white balance.
I thought i didn't have to W/B because its .raw files but maybe i should do a custom WB before I start each session.
Just pulled the red channel down a bit in 'Snapseed' app and its a lot better.

Well done Andy. You resolved a lot of the stars in the core very well, they look nice and round.
Not sure if you'd like this method, but I set my white balance in photoshop with a star that's in the frame with a similar color index(B-V) as our sun.

Thanks Alex. I dont mind the colour but some pics of 47Tuc are a lot whiter so im still playing around with getting the balance right.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give the Photoshop method a go.
Also trying a few different ways of w/b before i start an image run (eg. daylight, AWB, and custom) to,see if that makes any difference.

Please post when youve tested the AWB versus Custom WB.
I have the same question myself using a modified Canon50d.

I think that when shooting RAW, as we do, all the info collected by the sensor is recorded/saved independently of any WB setting - that the setting should make no difference to the data. Where it does show is on the non-raw file displays.

I process to get the sky background as natural as possible - not usually black.
Its nebulosity where the mod comes into it own, not on these globs.
Dithering seems to make a huge difference, dont you reckon?
