Lightbulb March Fly Macros!

Here's some macro shots of a March Fly, taken on the weekend. I used the 350D + Sigma 17-70mm @ 70mm. I was able to get to about 4-6cm away from the fly without it moving It's a bloody big fly, about 2cm long I reckon. Nice and colourful too, and what big eyes you have!

The first one is almost a full crop, but still resized down to 800px for the web. The others are crops to about 2000px, and then resized down to 800px.

These are my first real insect macros, kinda fun!

Yep, its about the time of year that they start arriving. the ones up here have a nasty bite. I know quite few people who are allergic and go into anaphylactic shockif they get bitten, so its long pants and shirts in 48 degree heat.

Great photo though

Excellent shots Mike - I particularly like the detail in the wings.

Very cool.

Their actual name is 'Marsh Fly' and they arrive any time after christmas.

They are mainly attracted to the colour Blue, so avoid wearing blue while outside
