Carina...YES, Carina!

RCW-58...the forgotten and neglected Wolf-Rayet in Carina.

Now, I know that by revealing this there will probably be a scamper by all and sundry to image this little lost Wolf-Rayet nebula, but ya get that I know, there will be 10" RC and 12" RCOS images in the next couple of weeks now  So here is the 3.3" refractor version in glorious one-shot-colour RGB for you A grand total of 5 hrs on ONE target, done in a SINGLE night. (yeah, I know...5hrs...me...5hrs...ermergerd !)

I had hoped to get a start on the H-a for it last night, but I chickened out as it got too late...errr....early and too cold (dropped to 3° ambient / 0.7° felt here last night). It needs the H-a to bring out the bubbling and rolling H-a shell (it's not worthwhile doing OIII as there is next to none in it after looking at many other examples). The PLAN is 5hrs H-a. I LOVE the dark lanes in the left field!

Usual guff:
Moon: 65%

Telescope: Takahashi FSQ-85EDX Baby Q

CCD: SBIG STF-8300C one-shot-colour running at -15°

Mount: Vixen SXP

Guiding: converted Takahashi 7x50 finder with a helical focuser and a Lodestar

Location: side yard, Canberra Airport (Bortle cried....)

Software: MaxIM 5 capture, PHD2 Beta guiding, SharpCap polar alignment, PixInsight for pre-processing and initial adjustments, PS6 for final adjustments

Yes, I KNOW the tilt is back (top left corner) - my fault, I neglected to reset it after cleaning the CCD platen.

The whole enchilada on Astrobin: https://www.astrobin.com/full/339252/B/

Here's some low-res versions for those not bothered in viewing my big tomales:

It's a cute little critter. Some Ha will certainly help.

Logan, I overlaid Don Goldman’s mapped NB over mine and blinked it. Sure, Ha will bring out some more but surprisingly not an enormous amount. It does however bring out the detail to the peculiar bubbles and toroidal nature of the nebula.

Ah, i'm mostly thinking it would make it much brighter than it is right now. yeah, more detail would be good also

A little brighter...I think Don uses a 24” scope so I have lost 21” of light gathering and brightness

Here’s an example with a 16” RCOS:http://cosmicphotos.com/gallery/imag...ld_album_id=11

Fiiiinally something interesting from you Lewis

Even if it is a bit faint, it's quite a good shot of a very interesting object, yes the wide field would be great with some more data, those lanes are indeed cool, keep this sort of thing coming

Mike

Thanks Mike, and I agree - decided recently to get well and truly off the well beaten track and hunt down some of the odd and unusual. Last RCW-58 image here on Ice I could find was 2 years ago.

Of course, trying to stay within the little Takka's limitations - this one was interesting - I could BARELY see it in the screen stretch after the 10 minute test shot, so it was more just blind imaging - I knew the star patterns, so knew it was close. 5hrs as you see with the 85 just shows it enough (though some buckets of H-a are going to help - alas not tonight it seems).

Got a list of the odd and road-less-travelled, so expect more in the coming months. There are a couple more RCW bubbles I want to do for a start.

Now with a little Atrous wavelet de-noise...which makes it a little frosty but mitigates the noise some: https://www.astrobin.com/full/339252/C/

Or with some Unsharp Mask: https://www.astrobin.com/full/339252/D/
