Err, I reckon I stuffed my Canon 70-200mm F2.8L Lens

Hi Guys well i did it, dismantled my Canon 70-200mmL F2.8 Lens as instructed because the barrel was loose and separating.

Got that all sorted and put it back together and now it wont talk to the Camera

I reckon I stuffed it somehow,

but i followed the instructions to the letter, I know that there is not much anyone can do but I surly am disappointed,

just thought I would let you know.

I have done much work on Cameras and the like but this is my first stuff up.

Don't suppose anyone out there has the same sort of lens for sale, broken or not so that i could make one out of two, so to speak.

I think it was all those tiny electronic ribbons that got me.

I am going to have another go at it today, what else could go wrong

Would Canon touch it now do you reckon, or would that cost more than it is worth

Hello leon,

Sorry to hear of your woes. Perhaps one of the ribbon cables is not fully seated in its mating connector or was pulled out slightly during reassembly. I can certainly imagine it might be possible when sliding the outer barrel or other parts OVER these cables. Are the cables stuck down in anyway to help avoid this? Hopefully there are no broken solder joints or cracked ribbon cable, but check for that as well. Are the camera and lens contact pins clean and able to move as required. Also clean the camera and lens contacts with contact cleaner, isopropyl alcohol or metho.

And take care of static discharge... wear straps, use conductive surface on the table you are working on, don't wear rubber shoes and don't rub yourself against the chair too much

JA, yes i have checked and rechecked all that sort of thing, and I think bojan nailed it.

When I did my cameras i always used the straps worked on rubber matting and even earth myself.

This sounds about right, what a dill i am

and it is a bit humid here.

Just means you will have to buy a II. The II IS USM is a remarkable lens.

I'd have offered you mine, but, I sold all my photography gear in the last week.

yikes - sorry to hear.

if it can still be manually focused and zoomed and the aperture is open, it could still have a lot of value for astro work.

Ray the aperture is stuck on f32 and wont zoom, focus, actually it just dose bugger all.
So I am going to pull it apart today again for the third time and see what other damage i can cause.
Or it just might come good, what can i lose it is buggered anyway, at least i know what is inside them.

When I did my 450D IR removal it didn't work the first few times but then a little patience and care during re-re-reassembly and it recovered and has done so ever since. Tough little camera that one...

The wee ribbon connectors would be my guess..

Brent I have done the job again this morning, and now things have changed.
Firstly the aperture is stuck on F32, so the view finder is very dark and it still wont auto focus.
Secondly it dose take images on AV, TV, Auto Setting, and on the P setting, Bulb comes up with Err, as dose Manual.
So we have some improvement but it still is quite useless the way it is.
If i could get it to open the shutter and manual focus i could use it for lightning shots, which i have been using it for.

It's directly because of that, lol. My gear was just sitting there depreciating not being used. I don't do weddings/portraiture anymore, and, I don't go overseas anymore so landscape photography is off the cards, too.

All my gear was in pristine condition. I still have a couple of lenses to get rid of. I won't get rid of my 1V HS or my RZ67 Professional II, though.

One day, I will buy into digital photography again.
