The general public won't be bidding on it.
Dad will say: "$550 for that little thing!!! and it can only look at the Sun, no way Johnnie, the one at D1ck Smiths can see Galaxies and it's ony $87"
More than likely, only Amatuer Astronomers will bid, and not all Amatuers will want one, so the bidding may not go right up. It might stay down low. Stranger things have happened on ebay.

Arent some of the PST's prone to problems with coatings or something similar?
It pays to research these things and ask the right questions of the seller

Yes Geoff.
There was some kind of red "blooming" around the front objective lens which was quite widely reported on CN.
There were quite a few cases of the problem, in fact.
Seems most people were treated quite well when they returned their PST for treatment or replacement.

The photo's in the ebay ad appear to be showing the newer clear objective which is not subject to the same problems as the original design.

Dont quite understand how ebay works but is $550 the buying price or is there a reserve that must be met?
For a 1 month old scope I would imagine the reserve would be pretty close to the new price.

$550 is just the starting price Bob. There may be no reserve.
But you can bet that if one person puts a bid on it, you'll get a flurry of bids from others, especially closer to the end of the auction.

That's the one Matt. It's the same as the one I've just received.

I'm way ahead of you, but I think I'll pass, no matter how much I like a good bargain

Definitely worth it if you can pick it up in Sydney for $550-$600. Peferably pick it up on a sunny day so you can check it out. But make sure it's the later revision with the clear objective - I don't know if the warranty is transferrable.

It's already climbed over the $700 mark.
Rapidly losing its bargain status
