Solar filters

Does anyone know any of Aussie retailers selling either or both the JMB (Identi-View Class A) glass solar filter or the Thousand Oaks Type 2+ glass solar filter???

Hi Matt

Bintel sell a range of what they refer to as “JMB Type A Solar” in sizes ranging from ETX-105 through 8” SCTs, 4.5" to 10” Newts and a couple of small one’s for refractors.

My Astro Shop sells what looks like a comprehensive range of Thousand Oaks Type 2 Plus filters.

Being a bit of a sticky beak, didn’t you have a big ‘un for the C9.25?

I cancelled my order in disgust, but am now casting an eye around for a solar filter from a local supplier

Sorry Matt - I thought it eventually arrived, but after the event.

Based on my very limited experience with glass filters, one from Thousand Oaks and one from JMB, I would not go back to glass filters now that I have used the Baader solar film. That is not to say that glass filters from those suppliers are inadequate – far from it, they are well made, safe and do a great job.

However, IMHO the Baader solar film has given me better results for astro photography so to go back to a glass filter would be a step backwards for me, especially with the Baader astro photography specific film. Also, with one of the glass filters, I had an annoying reflection but that is probably a fault at my end rather than with the filter.

Scopestuff also sell the C9.25 Astrozap Baader solar filter and have always delivered on time and been responsive to my enquiries. If you want to chance your arm again that is!

I've bought stuff from Scopestuff in the past with no probs at all, Dennis.

That's who I'd buy a Baader solar film filter from in the future, if that's the filter I decide on buying and, to be honest, is the most likely option.

That's the one I had on order with OPT

Just casting an eye around at the various "other" options, particularly for visual. I like the more sun-coloured (yellow) appearance of the glass filters, especially the Thousand Oaks. Although I do plan on solar imaging at some stage.

You could always go for the big bucks Matt and get a Coronado 60mm Ha filter and mount it on an ED80. Superb......would want to be for the price
