Make spammers pay.

I wonder if the terms and conditions could be altered to say something to the effect that a member advertising say loans will agree to pay an advertising fee.... Of course I don't know how the fee could be collected but there may be a way...
Certainly in signing up a contract is created...
It is a shame our moderators have to spend so much time cleaning up with no reward.

I suspect it would be futile to try to extract money from spammers just by referring to the Ts & Cs - they have no morals at all, so they certainly won't worry about the legalities of what they signed up for.

Speaking of Ts & cs - did you see the recent "experiment" in Britain where a Wi-Fi hot-spot company put in some rather bizarre Ts & Cs in the fine print (you know, those pages and pages of information that you have to scroll through, and tick the box at the end acknowledging that you've read and understand the terms), requiring applicants to do 1,000 hours of community service, including:

Cleansing local parks of animal waste
Providing hugs to stray cats and dogs
Manually relieving sewer blockages
Cleaning portable lavatories at local festivals and events
Painting snail shells to brighten up their existence
Scraping chewing gum off the streets

22,00 people signed up!

There was also a prize offer for anyone who contacted the company and pointed out the clause. Only one person received a prize.

Hi Julian.
Does not surprise me at all.
I could see QCs arguing about this until the money runs out.
The law basically says that you are responsible for what you sign up to unless you can plead "non es.factum"... I am not even sure of the spelling its been so long...but you can get out if the document is entirely different to what you thought you were signing...so maybe if you signed a transfer of title on your land believing it to be a mortgage you could get out of it....like all legal matters each case must be decided on its merits and how much the parties can afford.

I am confident that signing up here could create an enforceable contract... Which means say a spammer incured fees there would be a right to recover...if you can find them and if they have money ...obviously if OS we have immediate problems.
And of course to work out how this could be made work would cost a lot of money...mind you if there is money being paid I or someone else will come up with how...
It just gets to me the spammers I see go thru here and the keyboard pounding to get rid of them.

Did you see today..thread after thread by some doodle promoting loans...
All gone now but the time...and time is money...a bit of life wasted on a spammer.

And if one could find a solution I assumed it would be a money spinner cause everyone would buy the idea given the spamming.

Apparently Spam, the tinned stuff, is highly regarded in Hawaii.

Alex someone is benefitting from the ads served for every page viewed. No prize for guessing who. But not the mods.

Boozle... spam was originally (still is) "spiced ham in a can" from before WWII. A key point was it did not require refrigeration. During the war the U.K. was desperately short of meat and Spam was a usedul solution as it could be easily shipped from the US, lasted for ages and minimal wastage apart from the can.

There were many recipes using spam in creative ways and I'm old enough to remember my mum using it occasionally. I've even seen it feature in one course of a degustation menu in a restaurant celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

It's still a staple for real backpackers (not hipsters) yachties and a few picnics - if you like it.

Mr Tinty is becoming a pain.
I lost count of the spam this morning.
I guess its probably best not to post in affected threads until it has been cleaned up.

These are spam bots, they all have similar user names and usually sign up in groups.
They're easy to spot (can't divulge how) and we ban whole groups at a time, even before they make their first post.
Mike even bans entire IP groups.

But if none of us mods are online at the time they do get through especially in the early hours.
They're certainly spam bots because they usually each make exactly 34 posts and then stop.

They are getting very troublesome for us as it takes up a lot of our time and stops us from enjoying the forum ourselves, it's become a constant daily battle.

It's up to Mike now if he will look into implementing a different login strategy.
Until then us mods will just have to do the best we can and also rely on your help to just be patient and report these spammers.

Cheers
RB

Many moons ago I ran a website for a Model Railway Club. It became quite popular with a healthy blog forum. My method of beating the spammers was to place rules and a rating for all users. When a new login/ profile appeared any posts were "held" until myself or another moderator has viewed the post, if it was all good we would release the comment to the forum. If there were 5 good comments we would give full access ongoing. If the post was crappy spam we would delete the unreleased post and block the IP.
It was a fair bit of work and of course the forum had some lag for new users however it seemed to work well.
Not sure if that would take too much time for a site of this size.

BTW a big shout out to the IIS moderators, you do a great job to keep this site neat and tidy, respectful and on point.

Thanks Rob.

All these suggestions sound good, many people have suggested alternative login procedures in the past too.
Unfortunately it's out of our hands as mods and up to Mike to see what's appropriate to implement for IIS.

Feel free guys to send him a PM with your suggestions.

You can never change human traits so why waste time with something that can't be changed. Spam is 99% easy to automate removing/blocking and the little that gets through is simple to remove, if its chore you've got thing set up poorly.
