May 05 edition: Aust Sky & Telescope

Look out for the May edition of Australian Sky & Telescope Mag. I received my subscription today.

There's a very interesting article on the RCX400. Sounds like it is worth the money if you are into photography, but not much better for visual work than the LX200.

There is also a bit of a US space exploration theme, with lead articles about the futures of Hubble and the Space Shuttle.

Check out the photo on page 47. There is always something new to learn about the M42 region!

According to NASA, the Hubble Space Telescope is DOOMED. They are not going to repair it again. Newer, BIGGER one on the way.
They might try to send a robotic repairer up, but don't hold your breath.
They might just attach the 'little rocket packs' to it for a controlled descent into the Pacific Ocean.
Very sad day when that happens. L.

Only if! There is no plan to send a visible light scope up. Xrays, IR & radio yes, but visible light no. I can understand, from a scientific point of view, the decision to exclude the very narrow visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, but there is something special about looking at celestial bodies/objects as they might look thru our own eyes if we got close enough.

I read a NASA report saying what Steve just said! No visual observations on the next model. It's only going to do Radio, X ray, etc. Dissapointing isn't it.

I've seen a doc. on the 'next' space t'scope, & it's supposed to have 8?? mirrors that fold down, ala flowers petals, & would poss. be multi. purpose. Visual spectrum as well as IR, UV etc.etc. Approx.8 mtrs Diam.

It would be sad to see hubble come down, hasn`t it done a great job tho. Can you imagine how many people have learnt something because of this eye in space. Do you think i could use some bits off it if they put it down in my backyard.

I saw the Andrews ad in the latest sky and tel -he has advertised a green laser pointer for $99- and dashed off this morning to see if i could grab one

should have phoned first , he's had some issues with the supplier and is not sure when he will get the shipment...could be a couple weeks.

also while I was there I had a look at the 25 x100 binos that he advertised also in sky and tel-what an absolute monster,very tempted but resisted for the moment.

I didnt escape unsinged, got a new pair of 12 x60 binos to replace my old 7 x 50s.

Had a quick try before cloud tonight and was very pleased. At the price ($119) can't go wrong.

Picked up the May edition yesterday. Had a flick through yesterday, some good stuff in there.

Don't know how much is local content or locally written (harder to tell than usual), but there's some good articles anyway, especially about the shuttle and NASA and hubble.

Also congrats to Robin Sharrock and John Drummond who both have some of their photos printed! Robin has some moon/jupiter occultation photos, and John Drummond has some comet photos printed. Well done guys.

Oh and also, the June edition is going to contain Greg Bryant's SPSP report, should be a good read.

Thanks a lot Iceman, yep, I was stoked to get 3 pics in the may edition.Thats 3 newspapers/magazines the pictures were printed in. Jonathan Nally from Aust Sky & Telescope was very quick off the mark when I sent them to him in lo-res. He emailed me back virtually straight away & said submit them in hi-res which i did. I also sent them in lo-res to Sky & Space but for the 3rd time now, never got a reply. Interesting that the pics were printed with the lunar north pole & jupiter at the top of the image whereas it should have been viewed the other way round.

You can see the robot getting bored up there and attempting to " clean" the mirror with metal fingers. "Woops"

Picked up a copy today , enjoyed the read , congrats to Robin , superb occultation images . The Nasa, Magnetar and RCX400 articles where interesting along with the monthly roundup of observing highlights {eg:Jupiter} .....have to try hunting down Quasar 3c273

Do they have an email addy you can email too? I keep meaning to send stuff in but because I have only known them to want print format(sky and space), i couldnt be bothered to get around to it!
