Last night

It was crystal clear and dry last night with a good breeze. Had a great time using my 12" dob and 13mm Hyperion EP (115x, 40' field). The new observatory kept the faint light from my neighbours Christmas decorations out. My only distraction was a green frog that has taken up residence jumping around, and one mozi that he/she didn't find. I saw lots of DSO, will make a list of them later. Also used my Superview 30mm EP (50x, 92' field) on Pleiades and the LMC. The Merope nebula was really easy to see at low power. Observed from 9pm to midnight.

Sounds like a nice night - I bet it's great to be inside an observatory now.

You clocked up in one night more than most of us observe in a week!
You're an inspiration!

The interesting thing with the new 12" is I come across galaxies that I haven't noticed before when I am sweeping from a star to a DSO that I have seen before.

alpha Dor

The area around mag 3.3 alpha Dor is interesting.
It is the star near NGC 1617 on the attached map from SkyMapPro.
The distance from 1553 to 1566 is exactly 1 degree.

That whole bit of sky is around archenar sure has a lot to offer glen .
1617 is visible from home as were 1566 and two others in the same fov
1549/1553 ?. some high cloud drifted in about then so didn't get a good look
also 1313 ,1534/29 ,and few of the fainter ones around grus
throw in all the better known galaxies /clusters and I spent most of the night in one pretty small part of the sky

Yes 1566, 1549 and 1553 are in the same low power field and all bright.
