Thanks guys. Any ideas on what would get rid of the banding present in the 1st image?

Banding is a real pain to get rid of. Having correct darks can help a lot but it doesn't always remove it all. My Nikon D700 had banding issues that were largely mitigated with darks but still showed up when stretching or when there just wasn't enough signal.

Great details, Ryan. There's a banding removal script in PI, CanonBandingReduction, that the DSLR guys seem to like.

Cheers,
Rick.

Nice work Ryan, I recon this is what the Milky Way would look like under a very dark sky, if we had slightly larger pupils and slightly better colour sensitivity at low light levels...wouldn't it be great!
