A call to arms – H0ughy and the S Hemisphere Guardians
Hi,
I’ve just been to look at LPOD for 7th Dec 2006, where Chuck has published 3 images of the full Moon as follows:
North up (naked eye),
South up (Newtonian ‘scope) and,
North up, E on left (SCT or refractor with star diagonal).
However, these are for the Northern Hemisphere and it appears that the Southern Hemisphere orientation has been…cough, cough…overlooked?
If you feel so inclined, and you register on the LPOD site, you can post a comment about this, ahem, N bias.
Cheers
Dennis

I'm very grateful you didn't make a mockup to illustrate that post Dave.

I feel your pain Dennis.. it just needs more contributions from southerners like yourself to set the record straight.
Unfortunately with the way the weather has been, I think it could be months before we've got something worthy to submit to LPOD.

Dennis, I submitted a statement, whether or not Chucky posts it up there will be another question. BTW I think he has re-edited the article from when I originally read it last night.

the reply to my response - I think he doesnt like me
as I replied and the response....................
"Congratulations on a great image, however, should the Northern Hemisphere perspectives finish on the “artificial horizon” where anything south of that doesn’t exist!!! There is another hemisphere that seems to have been completely forgotten. What if Australia or Brazil, Chille, New Zealand were the hub of the world and everything was orientated to suit our perspectives from the “Southern” Skies and our view was jammed down your throats as the “correct” and only way of viewing and we completely disregarded the way things look for you!! Really, you could add to that that to solar observations too, but that is another story. My point is don’t ignore the “other” hemisphere. Just because some guys decreed in 1960 to say this is it, no other ideas will be accepted and thats the rule! I think the the “modern” way of observing the moon should be adopted, ie walk outside, look up and accept that the moon will look different from every point on the longitude, with repect to the lattitude.

h0ughy- Righto! As I said in comment 2 above the look varies from hemisphere to hemisphere and where the Moon is in the sky. Before the internet, mapmakers and book publishers had to chose which orientation to use for their one presentation. The only thing we can say in favor of N up is that is the way it is done for all planetary maps, not just the Earth. But I bet, if most people on Earth lived in the southern hemisphere that the standard orientation would be S up!

Sorry, but I don't hold a lot of creedence in what Chucky babe says.
I sent him a pic I took of the coloured Moon. It was only slightly coloured, less than the one I posted in here!.
His reply: "Sorry Ken, but I will not publish photos of the Moon showing colour as the colours do not represent anything"
And yet it is his LPOD site that I got the information about what the colours mean (minerals etc) and it was accompanied by a pic of the Moon with more colour in it than mine!!!!! The pics he shows on the link above have more colour than the one I sent him!
Maybe it was upside down and that's why he wouldn't publish it

Very true Ken, your moon shot would have been more upside down than mine, but dennis's would not have been as severely "upside downed" as ours. I wonder if the internationally recognised "the bird" would be picked up , to them it would be pointing down
