Saturn - CD all there? 26 Nov 2006

Hi

The jet stream map looked perfect but it seems more localised conditions stamped their authority on this morning’s Saturn session. The seeing was probably 6 or 7 /10 but with the smoke haze and relatively low altitude, the image on the notebook display was dimmed and in a constant state of flux, as waves of “seeing” washed over the rings and planetary disc. I didn’t notice any single image with both nodes of the CD simultaneously well defined, they seemed to take turns.

Celestron C9.25, Meade 647 Flip Mirror, Televue x2.5 Powermate, Philips ToUcam 840K. Altitude 44 degrees.
Brisbane, Qld, Australia. 26th November 2006, 04:03 am AEST (GMT+10).
253 from 1001 frames. 5 fps, 1/25 sec, Gamma=0, Gain=70%.
Acquired using K3CCDTools. Processed in Registax 4. Wavelett 1=20, 2=10.

I might claim the CD around the disc for this one; at least it looks that way on my LCD monitor – what do you think?

Cheers

Dennis

on my clearbright screen on the lappy it looks very blurred and like there are a few frames not lined up giving a ghosting effect, but the "CD" is well defined!

Blue channel is a mess!

Hi Dave

Thanks for that feedback. I’ve just split the image in RGB channels and the Blue looks a mess! Must be a combination of lowish altitude and scattering by haze/smoke? Thanks also for confirming the CD!

Cheers

Well collected Dennis, expecially considering the conditions. CD is circum Saturn on my screen as well.

That smoke haze would really be scattering the blue light. Have you thought about creating an artifical blue channel in PS?......... just for the artistic effect of course

Nice image Dennis, definitely looks like CD all the way around. Nice processing too, shame it's just so grainy given the low brightness lately.
