The Apollo 10 mission, on which Cernan was Lunar Module Pilot, was
a dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing. They reached a
tantalizing 50,000 feet (15,000 metres) above the surface.
Luckily for Gene Cernan and fellow crewman John Young, they both
got to come back on later Apollo missions to walk on the Moon.
Both Cernan and Armstrong did their engineering degrees at Purdue, Cernan
in Electrical Engineering and Armstrong in Aeronautical Engineering.
Cernan later did his masters in Aeronautical Engineering at the Naval
Postgraduate College in California.
