The Running Man nebula NGC1977

Hi everyone,

Here's an image I did of the Running Man Nebula in Orion.

The image is composed from 8 x 3 minute exposures with my modified Canon 300D at prime-focus of my 12" f/5 GSO telescope with Baader Coma Corrector and Baader UV/IR Cut Filter installed.

The GSO 12" scope is mounted on an old/now extinct Samson equatorial mount and manually guided with a 4.5" newtonian guidescope.

In this image, I was quite surprised to see the darker nebula adjoining the running man nebula (at right and lower right of pic).

There is a higher resolution image here http://www.skylab.com.au/pmsa/ngc1977.html

best regards to all
Paul Mayo

Well done Paul, the darker nebula is the mark of a deep shot and forms part of the greater very faint background nebulosity that covers many degrees of sky. I didnt set up my scope as it looked too hazy at first but it did get better as the night wore on.

Hi iceman,

glad you liked this one. First time in a while since the skies, family and work have coincided to let me out into the observatory. There'll be plenty more images from me - just gotta hope for more clear skies and more free time.

thanx

G'Day Mike,

yep it's almost the "ORION time of year" again... (already). There will be plenty more M42s, Running Mans, Horseheads, and Flames to go in the weeks ahead.

Glad STAR Atlas-PRO is working well for you. I do visit your web site from time to time and have noticed the credits to STAR Atlas-PRO (SAP), most of all I am pleased you find it useful and that it is working fine with your FS2 drive system.

best regards
Paul

thanks tornado33,

I hadn't realised how deep the image was until I saw it stacked on the computer screen - then I sat their in amazement while I studied the dark nebula which I had not expected to see. Moreover I was quite impressed to see how the dark nebula seems to lay in the foreground, while the blue nebula from the running man seems further in the distance.

That's the great thing about this image - it showed me (us) something we have not necessarily seen previously - and I like that.

best regards and clear skies
Paul M
