Teflon for a dob

Hi all
Recurring theme I know, but does anyone know where I can get Teflon pads for my dob? Or is there another substance usable?

Thanks

Richard

Don't know but I used to have a roll of teflon tape I used to use for all sorts of slidey purposes. Its used on plastic sealing parts of heat shrink machines. We used it often, just stick a stripe to the rubber base of the sealer, the sealer head presses down with its heated wire to cut and seal plastic around a product which goes into the heat tunnel for shrinking. The teflon tape doesn't burn and the melted plastic just wipes off to keep a clean sealing edge. Pretty sure we got it from 3M and it was about and inch wide, but I've seen it in other sizes. it's like a roll of masking tape except it had peal-off backing to stick it where you need after cutting a length to match. No idea where mine has ended up but its surprisingly useful for all sorts of things.

Edit: It was more like a giant roll of masking tape or bandage. The stuff we used was clothe tape with the teflon layer on top to it had a little thickness to it and the full roll was like a dinner plate in size and the flesh colour of bandage. Looked on bunnnings and they didnt appear to have anything similiar only teflon plumbing tape which is nothing like this stuff.
Ebay shall PROVIDE! . Thats the sort of stuff I was using. made great feet for computer mice to glide on my desk with ease. You should be able to adapt someting like this for your dob (a wider roll probably but the link gives you info for local searching).

Most firms that specialise in l various plastics and cut to size, will stock Teflon or more generically PTFE. I used to go to Cut to Size Plastics in Artarmon and they would let me look through the Offcuts and cut some off for as nominal price as you don't need very much . Avoid Nylon or any other of the cheaper Teflon like plastics , they just dont work properly .

I can recommend getting the acid etched stuff which is brownish on one side so you can use epoxy to mount the stuff . If you use brads or nails or dill holes in it you often get raised rings and bumps which take a long time to wear down into proper contact . I prefer cutting the stuff with a craft knife and just epoxy it down once I have the right location .

You can also use thin double sided tape . My favorite thickness was 1/16" rather than the more common 1/8 and 1/4" . It tends to press flat better and give you good contact . From memory all the qualities of freedom from stiction and smoothness are best at a loading of about 6 or 7 kg per square inch of teflon .

Thanks guys,

I'll have a look around for the tape versions. A place in Newcastle quoted me hundreds of dollars for a sheet which they wouldn't cut!

Richard.

Hi

I have a sheet About 1 or 2mm thick. Would a piece of that help?

There are teflon sliders at Bunnings etc as well.

I used a circle for the base of Dob mount I built. Link if interested http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=147182

Thanks Matt and Phil. I've bought some from eBay - I'd looked previously but didn't see any - no wonder I haven't discovered a comet in 40 years of lookin'!
