A Big Win For Me.

I got an old '07 BMW ex police bike here. I've been riding it for a couple of years. It went to Wackers for a recall on the fuel pump, but that's another story.

When I got it back in January, The ABS threw an error within a week. I bought a device on the last US trip which talks to the bike when connected to a PC so it said low ABS motor volts. After some digging, it's a design fault. They have an electric motor on the ABS which pumps the rear brakes when you press the front. Police love it, you can brake in corners with confidence.

This motor is sealed against the elements. So no where for the carbon dust to go. It jams the brush carriers so get an open circuit. The motor is preened to the ABS, not bolted. The magnet cover is attached with self sealing clips.

I broke the preening and got the motor off the ABS, drilled out the self sealing tabs, opened it and flushed it with contact cleaner. On reassembly, all alarms are gone and a test ride shows the ABS working.

Fixed the Sucker. BMW want $4K to fix this on a 10 year old bike. Cost me $30.

Yippeeee.

That's a serious saving! Begs the question as to what BMW would have done to fix the problem at that price tag.

I think the problem with BMW is they are pushing on the edge and rely on vendors too much. They didn't make this ABS nor any ABS in any of their transports. It got sold to them just like we got sold the F16. Looks good but devils in the detail. Seems to start after the car wing of the company took over all of BMW around 2000.

I got a circa 2001 530i here. All the rubber seals are nitrile. It goes hard when heat cycled too many times. They didn't know that then so idiot me has to change all nitrile seals for vitrile seals, good as new. And will last forever

sweet robin,
almost the same as when the rubber boots on my muffler/tail shaft assembly degraded -went to the Renault dealer -price to fix $4k..i said WTF?, apparently they won't sell the rubber boots by themselves -had to buy the whole tail shaft. bought aftermarket from the UK for about $100 delivered.
I asked the renault guy did he feel bad asking people for so much money for something so small -got no answer
