Maaaaaaates! - M8 and M20 Narrowband

Yay, my first ever narrowband image taken with my own equipment! Can you feel the excitement? Sorry, I digress....

Taken with the new ASI1600 mono-cooled cam and Takahashi E-130D astrograph, camera at -15c, this is 13 shots of 3nm Ha @ 5 mins each and 10 shots of 3nm SII, same exposure. Taken from my outer suburban backyard in Melbourne.

I created an artificial O3 channel using a combo of the 2 filters' data. Don't ask me what palette I used, I winged it, though I do recall SII was red...

Rather pleased with the variety of hues I got out of this. Loving the smooth nature of the CMOS sensor images.

Processed in Pixinsight, PS and Lightroom, oh and starless neb details added via Straton.

C&C welcome, I'm very new to this, so excited to be doing this stuff!

I'll be trying 10 min subs soon, though PI says 5 mins is maximum for my site - so I hope to stack a lot more subs in future - cloudless future I mean! Bloody overcast down here lately as most of you know.

Thanks for posting this Simmo, I can get a lovely suntan basking in the warm glow of the image and feel like I'm on holidays whilst wearing my sunnies

Great start, but really needs the O3 for depth imo.

Bet you're loving those new toys

Wow Simmo.
That's a great shot.
Really shows what this camera is capable of.
IF my 6nm Ha filter ever arrives AND IF the clouds ever disappear, I will be hoping to test the 10 minute limits of the ASI1600mm myself.
Good luck with the rest of the photo!
Scott

Hmm, so I better severely reduce my image to be as subtle as yours then . Yes I'll grab equivalent O3 data when I can, hopefully by 2017!

Thanks Scott, I'm already sure that 10 mins will be too long. Cloudy Nights forum is proving that gain 200 is the best setting, meaning that 3-5 mins should be perfect. Best accessory will be a larger disk drive!

That's great Mike, thanks, especially as I managed to do some sneaky deconvolution in a pretty subtle way and it seems to have snuck thru without comment!

What a great image Simon, looks like you had some good practice with narrowband data in the past!

But...wait a second...do I see some decon artefacts?.... Just kidding! Awesome work.

Thanks again fellas, encouragement is appreciated, especially when spending those long 115 minutes imaging, Hahahahahaha. I think it took me longer to stack!

Nice, should look very good when you get OIII.

What settings did you use for the ASI1600?

Thanks Chris. I had the camera set at -15c, gain 139 and offset 20. Tried dithering but it delays imaging time considerably and isn't that effective for such a noiseless camera
