Strange flashes of lights over Sydney tonight

I have just got home from work and on the way home there were bright flashes of light over Sydney every few minutes - It looked a bit like lightening low on the horizon, but the sky is relatively clear tonight.

Some of the flashes have been fairly bright and in different directions. It has been quite consistent every few minutes for at least the last ~45 mins.

Has any one else seen this? Any idea's on the cause?

I took a video on my phone and will try and post a still image later tonight.

Cheers,
Mark

Looks like it was distant lightening between the Hunter Valley and Central coast and then over the ocean.

Must have been quite isolated as it was mainly clear over Sydney.

Very unusual - I have never seen this before.

Yeah it came right over my house, but there was no rain. It was like the cloud hiding the space ship in Close Encounters. Perfectly clear night and just as i was going out to start imaging, i saw the flashes s approaching from the west. Its clear again now but lightening continues to flash out to sea, so no way to image tonight.
