Mag1 Instruments 8" F6 Portaball

$1850 Plus shipping

It’s time for this classic scope to find a new home. I’m having a serious downsize in preparation for my next adventure, and this beautiful scope is up for adoption.

Mag1 instruments had a fascinating reign making unique telescopes with exquisite optics. This 8” F6 has a 2001 Carl Zambuto mirror with a tested Strehl of .997 meaning that this primary is pretty much as close to perfection as is possible. It uses a curved spider too which does away with those pesky diffraction spikes so the view is stunning in its contrast as well as detailed in a way that only a mirror of this quality can be. Carl is still making these mirrors and you can buy one today for 1442 + GST, duty and postage at today’s exchange rate so you are getting this amazing scope for the cost of the mirror alone!

Of course, the name of the scope is a play on two of its primary characteristics: It is portable and can collapse in on itself for the ultimate in compactness (I bought this as my Travel scope), and the brilliant Ball mounting which allows you to use the telescope with the eyepiece in the most comfortable position with ease. Just the perfect companion to snuggle up to on a clear night.

There is plenty of information about this very scope on Ice in Space:

I have added a second set of mounting pins to the upper tube which allows extra in-travel so the scope can be used with all eyepieces now and even comes to focus with cameras to if you feel like placing it on an equatorial platform and doing some imaging.

Everything is in fantastic condition and the mirrors are still shining bright. There are plenty of folk who have viewed through it at star parties attended by both of its Australian owners, so ask about for a character reference.
