My Peculiar Pair of Meade 9X63 Binoculars

I bought a pair of Meade 9X63 roof binoculars of Ebay the other day.

The field of view written on the side of the binoculars is 305 feet at 1000 yards.

So in terms of angle that equates to

Field of View = Arc tan (((305/3)/2)/1000) X 2= 5.8 degrees.

But when I looked at the Southern Cross, instead of taking nearly all of it in, it fell way short (7 degrees takes in all the Southern Cross)

So I pulled out my Celestron 10X50 Ultima binoculars with field of 263 feet at 1000 yards, field of view =5 degrees. I looked at the Southern Cross and could see slightly more of it than with the Meade 9x63 pair. So the Meade pair has a field of around 4.8 or 4.9 degrees.

In my opinion, I think that Meade seem to be into stretching degrees.
Cheers,
Renato
