Angry Foxtel Telstra Internet

I have the trio package with Foxtel, home phone and internet and my internet speeds drop considerably after 6pm. This only started to happen recently. It drops 4 to 7 mbps!

They told me to complete ping and traceroute tests which I sent back to them and they escalated to level 2. They ended up closing the case based on one speed test I did during the day which came back as 10 mbps and never told me. I also sent a complaint and they never replied.

Does anyone else have any issue with their internet speeds?

P.S. I sent in another complaint just now. I hate it when you get not reply at all made about service or other matters (has happened on other sites before...).

OMG!

I dream of speeds that fast Stefan.

My internet is only EVER 3mbps in quiet times, and when it gets busy it can drop to as low as 2 or 300kbps.

We have (allegedly) an adsl2+ service with Telstra, but sadly we're about 4.3km from the exchange which reflects in the crapola speeds we get.

The NBN dudes are in the street though so the end may be in sight.

Oh boy, will a bit of speed be welcome in our house!!

Have you done a test from speedtest.com?
It drops by 4-7mbps or to 4-7mbps?

Other thing is what cable your on coax or ADSL.
I'm pretty sure coax is series loop type set up so the more get on the slower it goes.

I'm on cable(coax) and get 60-100mbps most times. sometime may drop to 30.

Other one is that with foxtel running? some of the bandwidth is used up to deliver the foxtel, rest goes to data.

Paul, I tried ADSL 2 and could never get a good stable connection.
I ended up putting the ADSL 1 modem back on and that was quicker.
Worth a try.

Yeah that is pretty far.

Cable length for me is around 1.5km. Since my area gets 11-12Mbps then I am entitled to get that required speed like I used to.

I find it very hard to believe that the speed of the internet can drop more than half in peak time.

Yup I use speedtest.net and Foxtels very own speed test.

Speeds:
Best speed I should be getting: 11 - 12
Currently getting: Between 2.5 and 7

and on ADSL2+.

Thanks Chris, I might just see if I can dig it out. We've been on adsl2+ for a few years though so not sure if I still have it.

It sounds like a contention issue. Your speeds drop at times of peak usage .

I'm on the NBN satellite scheme or waiting for it I should say.

Joined up mid last year as was approximately number 56,000 on the list.

The latest estimate is I could be connected by the end of this year.

Not long to go now

I had these exact same issues about 2 years ago and was told by Telstra that there was nothing that could be done about it, I would just have to live with it...WRONG. Before I went across to the Telstra/foxtel scheme I had nearly double the speed with Adam Internet, and from the same exchange. I got out of the contract with Telstra/Foxtel via the communications ombudsman and went back to Adam, and my speeds went straight back up. From this I can only deduce that Telstra do not have the bandwidth to satisfactorily supply their customers. BTW my speeds during those peak times dropped to nearly dial-up speeds.
I will NEVER use Telstra again for Internet, they are totally shonky and told me all sorts of blatant lies...

But Peter, wouldn't Adam still be using the same hardware etc that Telstra use. So regardless of who your ISP is, the service is still using exactly the same wires with the same bandwidth limitation all the way to the exchange.

What I mean is that you mention Telstra bandwidth being inadequate. But your signal is still going down the same over-crowded Telstra wires even when you're with Adam!

Have I got that right? I'm not the world's most techy, so I'm probably missing some important concept here

Paul, that is what you would think, but apparently Adam had different connections in the exchange apparently. All I know is my speeds when with Telstra were damn near at dial up during peak periods from memory 85kbps and not at peak time only around 400kbps. With Adam non peak 750-850 kbps and around 650kbps at peak times. One can only assume more Telstra customers for same bandwidth equals slower speeds...

I am still with Adam/IInet now and currently it is peak time 1615 and a speed test I just did for 43megs of random data came in at 771kbps, during the test an email came in as well. I am around 3.2k from the exchange.

Stefan the truth is as long as the internet works, Telstra and co wont give a crap what speeds you get. (for non-business users anyway since there's basically no SLA's)

They will just cop out to a number of bs reasons.

Can be a number of things Stefan, A cable outside or inside ur modem who knows, You just have to check everything and the sad part is ur speed only has to be 1.5 or above to be classed as ADSL2+

We noticed that the week that Netflix went live a few months back, the speeds here in Colac would dramatically drop at about 6pm. As NBN is due here this month, Telstra were not going to spend money to upgarde so we just had to put up with it.
It is a little better now, but not much!

just had telstra platinum cable package installed ,no wall plate just fed the cable through a hole in the where we hide the tele cables as we have it on the wall and straight into the modem because that can affect dl speed, just clocked it at 22.78 mbs ,happy with it so far

Have checked all the basics, I have even gone back to using my old modem which is a million times better than that Foxtel hub crap.

They contacted me asking me to do more ping tests over a few days, which i already know the results. Morning speed will be good, afternoon would be the best and evening the worst. Then they will say that there is nothing wrong on their end.

They actually closed my case a few days ago and never informed me until I called up and found out.

I sent a reply email just now. All my hardware checks out, my cables are fine and all the splitters in the house for the phones are working as they should.

Looks like I will be going back to TPG if nothing is done...at least for the internet that is.
