Dark Frames in Registax

having read the manual from back to front a couple of times l have only found vague references associated with dark frames.
is there a particular stage that dark frames should be loaded and when loaded are they automatically subtracted by Registax or is there some user intervention required.

I'll be interested to hear the replies to this but can't help much myself. I once (v2 or v3 of RegiStax) tried using dark frame subtraction - I loaded the dark frames and light frames all at the start. But I found it slow and was suspicious it wasn't working, so have stuck to subtracting them in other ways (photoshop for DSLR shots, CCDSoft for SBIG shots).

Usually the first thing I do after selecting the images/avis to process is to tell Registax which darks (and flats) to use. Once that is done, then launch into selecting alignment points.

I'm not sure if it makes any difference if you add the darks later, I haven't tried... but I have a sneaking suspicion that the darks are subtracted as the alignment process if done. I'm not sure though ... the only reason I say that is that I have a recollection of hot pixels disappearing during the alignment process when using darks.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, if anyone knows better!

The problem i have with Registax is that it is for ever telling me that my images are to large.
The images are raws converted to Tiff's, but it still tells me that they are to big, and when i check the properties of the image, i imagine it could be right, as each tiff image is 72 mb's.
so the whole process dosn't seem to work to well, but then i could be doing something wrong to, as i havent been at this for long.

I've never found RegiStax is [EDIT: insert "not"] not good with large files. It's great with videos but runs very badly with large individual frames. That's when I switch to using other pieces of software.

Leon, registax will often choke on files that size. While it will do DSLR images of deepsky (in a reduced form) it is principally used for Avies.

If you want to try it with DSLR images you may have to take the Tiffs into Photoshop first and reduce the images from full size to about 1/4-1/3 size and then give them a go.

BTW how much RAM do you have on your machine? For large files Registax (like most photo image manipulation programs) is very heavy on RAM. If you are trying to align, register and stack half a dozen 72 meg images I'd be wanting at least 1gig, preferably 2 gig +, to do the job.

It really isn't the best program to do the job.
