Comet C/2013 US10 Catalina and NGC 5466

Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) passes near globular cluster NGC 5466 in Bootes on the morning of January 6, 2016.

The comet seems to be holding steady brightness-wise at about magnitude 6.5 according to published reports, but I found it photographically dimmer when I shot it this morning. That may be because it was closer to the light pollution from Atlantic City when I shot it.

It’s also possible that the comet is dimming a bit as it is past perihelion (closest approach to the Sun). It is also nearing closest approach to the Earth, so the two balance each other a bit.

At magnitude 6.5 it is just below naked-eye visibility, but should be easy to find in binoculars or a telescope if you can get up early and brave the cold before the start of astronomical twilight at about 5:45 a.m. these days at 40 degrees north latitude.

This is a stack of 10 two-minute exposures.
