Thanks to previous feedback, especially from Paul about using the Ha to bring out the dust in this classic target. I think I'm going to give this one a rest for a while and move onto other targets but it was fun to spend a few nights getting the data for one image.
I'm pushing the QHY12 One Shot Colour camera to it's limits and this would be much better with a mono cam, but getting narrowband Ha data does improve the image, even with the lossy quantum efficiency of a colour camera!
(1 hr RGB w/ Hyperstar, about 3hrs in 10m exposures in Ha, QHY12 OSC CCD, Celestron 9.25" Edge HD SCT)
That is certainly showing more detail in the gas and dust surrounding these two objects. With more integration you would reduce the noise quite a lot but as you say you are moving on for now.
Yes it is tempting to add more and more data. My yard with streetlights / fences / houses only allows about 2 hours max on any high target so I have to pick my battles Your advice on this one was much appreciated and I learned a few tricks to apply to future targets!

the left hand image (of my series of 3) which appears almost identical to the original is the "RAW" enhanced format. Copy it .. and apply your own enhancement to it .. see if you still think it's pure bollox. (notice how your sliders
operate linearly over their full range).
Some users are not quite as offended by my images (which incidentally are not colour saturated in any synthetic sense). My enhancement protocol does all the right things to effectively normalize the image. Nothing too weird about it - really. I'm going to post my Sauron's Eye enhancement .. I work long and hard on these enhancements too by the way...and I'm going to post my Sauron enhancements and then we'll see what happens. See if you still think my protocol is "out to lunch". I'll stop if everyone really really feels there is zero merit in what I'm doing. Take a look at my Sauron's Retina post.
Since Dylan's image is one of the best I've seen and yours aren't, I can safely say I would appreciate you not stuffing up other people's beautiful work.
Cloudy Nights or some other forum might be better suited to your efforts.

Really I have to thank IIS forums, Southern Astronomical Society members who've helped me along the way, Celestron, Bintel & Instagram. I think "standing on the shoulders of giants" is the appropriate quote.
No watermarks for me, all my photos go straight to the public domain. So even Terri can go to town.
I believe I think its ok to reprocess other peoples data (IF the original author is credited and the person reprocessing doesn't make money from it, else the original author is entitled to royalties).
Not every one can afford astroimaging gear, and those who can might not be as good on the processing side.
That said if an author specifically says not to use their data, then out of respect and curtsey, it should not be used.
I for one very soon when I publish my first astroimages, will be supplying the raw data for others to use, so everyone can be part of this fine art.
It's one thing to process someone's data (with permission), and, another thing altogether to go ape and apply the clown vomit filter (set to 11) and completely ruin someone's very hard work.
The garbage that that person was spewing was just atrocious. I'm glad to see the images removed and the user banned.

You are mistaken.
Members are NOT allowed to even 're-post' someone else's image without express permission from the owner, let alone reprocess someone else's image without permission.
If you want to refer to an image that's not your own you're only allowed to post a link to the original image, but in no way are you allowed to re-process, add your name to the image and re-post it without permission from the original owner of that image.
This guy was re-posting/re-processing NASA data but lately he took it upon himself to re-process other members' images and making a complete mess of their work.

Can't agree more with the sentiments of those who complained.
It's only when you sit out there with all that gear on the few nights that are available hoping to get decent data that you realise how much you earnt the respect of your peers.
To blithely announce you've snatched several hours of work and corrupted it takes a special kind of rsole.
A very nice image. I think I prefer the first version - it very nicely shows fainter dust around the brighter nebula and it was a right choice IMO not to try to darken the background.
