I have a Dell 27" 4k and I have a bit of trouble with it. This forum and almost all apps are fine, they size up much the same as on any 27" monitor so I wont bother posting screen shots, but text is much smoother with the higher res. Only apps designed for 4k such as PS, LR and other graphics/video apps make use of 4k res in the presentation of images/video and menu/text size etc is settable.
The windows start-home screen (with classic desktop shell) has really tiny text and program icons by default, and I have found windows settings for this to be unreliable. Sometimes the PC powers up (win8) with default tiny text/icons, and sometimes larger with settings I have adjusted in windows. Icon positioning gets scrambled with each change of course. Im am used to this now, is not a deal breaker, I can just read the tiny text, no other app I use has this random problem. It might be a driver issue with the Dell monitor on power up.
Although most apps just look the same as on a normal 27" (but allow much more zooming out so more readable data shows, such as excel ), Some apps have problems. MYOB did until a recent update, CCD stack wont show many option pop up windows, I have to use it on a 2nd lower res screen.
The worry you have with small text I had too and is fair, but it occurs rarely as a problem and is usually reconfigurable within apps that utilise 4k. Im happy with 4k with the likes of PS and processing/watching video, its a big improvement.
I have a 5k iMac 27". The screen is gorgeous text is so clear. So clear that you can easily tell text from images with text in them. I run Windows on the Mac using Parallels. All fine, had some scaling problems with VMware though.
Processing images with this computer is fantastic, when I can get some data that is.
No experience with 4K monitors and native Windows but I concur with Stuart that the 27" iMac is simply stunning. Running Windows 10 on Parallels on this monster is as good as it gets.
I'm wanting the 4K monitor for Adobe CS6 software. The past few days I've been using 2 monitors for when I use CS6. As I don't have much desk space, I have to move the monitors and speakers around to use the second monitor. It's a bit of a pain to do so, another reason to have a single monitor on the desk.
4k is great with premier pro CS6 and PS/LR CC, text size is fine IMO. I havent tried it with PS CS6. I suspect it would be fine. I dont know what you can tell from the low res attachment (screen shot), but text is fine for me, and my eyes arnt great.

Thanks.
Any chance you could do a 3840x2160 screen, please.
I have a 65" 3840x2160 4K monitor. Aldi special.
I had to buy a new video card to get that resolution.
I drive it from a win7 media center computer.
You'll need a nvidia 730 at least. Not all cards do that resolution.
Even some of the hi end cards don't do that resolution.
Well I got my 4k monitor. I must say the text is a bit small. I don't know if I can get used to it.
I had trouble setting it up. As it turns out, you have to use the Display Port cable and the HDMI cable at the same time. I just had the DP cable connected and all I got was my wallpaper in the center of the screen with no icons and no taskbar.
