Magazine prices

I browsed my local newsagent today in the fond hope that I'd find something astronomical to purchase.

Lo and behold, Astronomy was on the shelf. Fantastic - even though it's not a publication I normally buy. Then I checked the price. It (the price) was in excess of $11.

The last issue of this magazine I purchased was around $9.95, at which time I thought it was a bit 'steep'. Sorry, publicants (OK, it's not a real word), there is no way I'm going to pay that sort of money.

You're better off to subscribe $58US for 12 issues.

I subscribe to Sky&Space but I browse the racks to see what the other mags have in them. The October issue of Astonomy ($11.50) is worth buying if you're interested in extrasolar planets - some good reading and great images.

I love this hobby but I prefer to buy the Blitz (martial arts) magazine each month ( they put in old back issues for free) two for the price of one and still well under $10.00 I in no way work or profit from this magazine I even think the Nexis is better value < don't work for them either

I stopped buying Astronomy mags a few months ago because of the price (thank you GST) and the internet. But today I did pick up 4 old (1987-1990) copies of Sky and Telescope for 50 cents each from an Op Shop

Good pick up Micko , blast if I can find any astro mags in the second hand books stores i visit .

Must admit I picked up the latest edition of Astronomy because of the Extrasolar article and noticed the price increase , geez its been a few years since I brought a copy of Astronomy or visited their net forum {way to slow}.As for prices anyone see the Canadian mag , from memory that goes for about 14 bucks and probably has 30 pages

The Astronomical Society of Tasmania used to put out a newsletter. Now the newsletter is online and your club membership ($55/year) includes a subscription to Sky and Space. This is very economical, I reckon. I wonder if other clubs could buddy up with one of the Oz magazines...

Further to Miaplacidus' comment;

Australian Sky & Telescope has an offer open to all club members, whereby if 5 or more members of a particular club subscribe, they receive a discount of 30% off the cover price.

ie. for an annual subscription (AS&T publishes 6 issues per year), qualifying members can subscribe for just $33.75.

Regards,

oh well I just subscribed again to the US S&T, can't wait for the Aus one which I also subscribe to, and S&S. But the Astronomy mag I normally buy in the newsagency, but $11 plus for the mag is way too dear. LOL I will end up buying it anyway. I have the entire US S&T going back until 1966, and some astronomy mags going back until 1980's, all of the S&S mags, that Southern astronomy one that popped up for a while. guess I am a sad case.

When on our last family trip to South Australia, we visited the Barossa Valley and went up to one of the little towns (Tanaunda or Angaston, I can't remember which one!) up there with a second hand bookshop that had quite a few old astronomy mags and even a french book on the apollo missions (that was fun trying to read!) I would have bought some but being the forgetful teenager I am, I didn't take my money (mooching of parents is good though ). If anyone lives in the area or visits they might wanna check it out.

I subscribe to both Sky and Space and Sky and Telescope. I enjoy them both! I dont know why, but I don't see a whole lot of the astronomy mag around. The local newsagents seem to only stock sky and space or sky and telescope. I do have the astronomy magazine's Mars special (someone bought it for me!)

I subscribe to a variety of Astro magazines but have usually also purchased Astronomy at the news agent...popped in the other day and decided to grab one...I too was shocked at the cost >$11 !!!

I reckon I will just stick to my currently subscribed ones...

How about IIS??
Mike - has this been considered, a bulk subscription for interested IIS members?? I'd put my hand up!

Whoa! Me too, plasmodium. I'm not a member of an A.S. and unlikely to be so.

I have just downloaded the subscription form from A.S.&T with the intent of subscribing for myself plus an additional one as an early Christmas present for my son.

I'll hold off for a week and see if Mr Bryant can come up with any 'special deal' for us.

I'm not brown-nosing, but S&T has always been the magazine on top of my list. A.S.&T. has, in my opinion, followed on well (pity about the 2-month issues, but we can't have everything).

P.S.

Mr B. The PDF form doesn't have an address to which one should send a cheque/money order.

P.P.S.

Ah, I found it in a previous issue of A.S.& T.

Magazines are definitely expensive. I subscribed to Aus S&T, wasn't too happy when they went bimonthly , and have since often bought a copy of of Aus S&S to help with the withdrawal symptoms (I'm not addicted ) . But I have to ask, what is going on with Aus sky and space? I know it's bimonthly, but I can't find it in any of my local newsagents that usually carry it, and their website is still showing the july/august edition as the latest edition It is october isn't it?
And as everyone says the overseas mags are so expensive (not to mention being from the northern hemisphere, making sky maps and observing suggestions not so useful).

Oh well, I'll stop now I've had my whinge.

Cheers everyone.
