NBN happening - woohoo!

Hey guys,

we got the slip in the lettebox the other day saying that NBN working is commencing in our area soon.

I imagine everyone gets these as work is about to begin, but can anyone remember the approx time between getting the form and NBN being available?

My current speed limit just 8km from a major city is a miserable 1.5Mbps, with rare bursts on some days of up to 3Mbps and regular slowing at any time to less than 1Mbps.

So NBN will be VERY welcome in our house

We never received any notification that it was all about to happen near us - just noticed some contractors wearing the obligatory hi-vis & digging trenches, with signs marking sewer pipes.

Assumed that was what they working on.

Walking past after a day or so, we made a joke to them about NBN - they said "We are NBN!"

The only sign of same was 'NBN' on the back of their safety hats!

They started work in my area at the end of April and NBN is scheduled to come on line in Jan - looking forward to it.

I moved house in April and the fibre on the street had just been finished being pulled into the trench. I was able to switch by the end of May. It could have been blind luck, I'm in a community of roughly 100 homes, so size of area being lit up could be a factor. I wasn't impressed having come from ADSL 2+ and being less than 2km from the exchange, typically getting 13-18 Mb/s regularly. A bump up to 25 wasn't noticeable in my daily web activities, but I do remember the affect I got when I moved to ADSL 2 some years ago, it was liberating. Good luck to you guys, I hope they finish ahead of schedule and you can enjoy the freedom.

My street got connected about 2 months ago (Para Hills, SA). Been getting lots of mailouts by providers. Good prices.

BUT I still have a year to go on current mobile plan. I get 4G in my house and that's quick enough for now.

NBN would cost $10 - $20 a month more but I would also get more data.

Are they putting cable to the modem or just joining to the existing copper from the street to the house?

My copper from the house to the street is faulty and needs replacing. I am wondering wheather it is worth waiting till the NBN comes here to complain (again), and then they will fit cable all the way to the house rather than replacing the copper wires.

Hi Doppler, it all depends on what the planners have finally decided for your area. The majority of new installs will now be FTTN/FTTB (fibre to the node/fibre to the building.
). If your area was already under construction when the Abbott government came into power, you might get lucky and it will continue as FTTH (fibre to the home). I hear Malcolm has no intention of returning to the original model. I suspect he and his communications minister will push even harder to cut costs and instruct the NBN to utilise any and all pre-existing infrastructure. The one saving grace is that your service has to meet minimum standards which means faulty wiring/cabling will be replaced.

By the time we get NBN at our place it will be obsolete, and don't be fooled it is not all fiber optic cabling !

Just wondering what kind of download speeds people are getting. Especially if connected to NBN.

Virgin mobile broadband 4G WiFi modem (I am on the edge of 4G service) I just downloaded a game from Steam - 5.4Gb in 40min. This is about normal for my service.

My 4g comes in between 4 and 7 mbs.
I had a huge spat with Telstra a few years ago when they told me I had no option but to go with them.
I said wrong and went wifi.
I refuse to go back to them until nbn is locally installed.
Which may not be this decade.
