ATA 5-shot semi-automatic shotgun
Hi,
I thought there might be one or two IISers who own one of these. In any case it's an interesting story about the gun's reliability.

Personally i'd like to see the moderators remove any discussion of guns from IIS.

I doubt there would be many IIS'ers with the requisite license to have a semi-automatic shotgun (Vermin/feral control or primary producer), though you never know.
Basically any semi-automatic firearm can fire out of battery if faulty of design or poorly maintained. I have seen top of the line Brownings do it. I have seen several M1 Garands do it, and I had it happen to me with an M1 Carbine.
Semi automatics require stringent cleaning and greasing. I can almost guarantee the reason this firearm fired out of battery was due to insufficiently maintained gas system/mechanisms.

I was a trap and skeet shooter years ago and can say the build up of unburnt powder that accumulated in the breach is unbelievable and required attention after every session.

I'm a farmer and a long time target shooter and some time feral animal shooter. I have no idea why you would want one of these.
I only use single shot no magazine firearms, if you can't hit it with one shot then you shouldn't be shooting it. That said i agree with Glen.

What is this Ken and Glen. Another vote for a nanny state. OK for you to have a comment but you are saying no one else should.
This is relevant news, well at least someone thinks it is and has as much right to be heard as some of the other clap trap that is posted here.

I agree.
Semi-auto for "feral" ducks... yes, he is a rice farmer and ducks ARE a problem, but really, a semi-auto shotgun? 2 shots from a double-barrel and those pesky bastiges are gone! (for a while).

Hi,
Please don't mistake my motivation here. I'm not trying to join the gun debate, I'm raising a concern for any IISers that just may own one of these.
I don't have a gun, don't want one, and I do have a position in the gun debate but, as you suggest, here is not the place for it.
Cheers

Dr Pimple Popper
Ok,
Instead of popping off shots here, let's lighten up with this

You still need to take aim carefully though.

Doug this site is for the love of astronomy, while I've seen a few heated posts about equipment, they are nothing like what we can get here when we have posts off topic.

Never quite worked out why you'd need a semi auto shotgun.
Semi auto pistol, rifle sure but not a shotty.
If you're a decent shot with a rifle, you can sit 200 yards away and head shoot ducks without disturbing their mates.
Don't tell me it isn't possible, I've done it.

Amazing that Geoff, quite rightly, posts a 'cautionary' topic to alert people who may have the weapon in question and thus may be in danger of injury using that weapon .............
and here we are discussing head shots of ducks, nanny state violations...............

Do you know why??????
Take a look in the mirror.
I'm sure it's not just a heading.

Looks to me more like General Chat is a sub-heading of General Astronomy.

Having said that I do enjoy some of the stuff that pops up in here! Perhaps there should be a general non-astronomy chat forum, always thought-provoking to hear what other people think about all sorts of things.

I can recall a couple of scope rigs I would loved to have shot to pieces.
In fact, that ATA-5 would have been the perfect tool for the job!

The moderators extend a fair bit of latitude to topics posted on the General Folder and all they ask is that people posting to these topics are respectful to others. Posts get locked or deleted if they break this one rule.

Let's see, the OP brought people's attention to the possibility that a particular firearm may be faulty in order perhaps to avoid the tragic injuries discussed in the article (in case there are IIS people on farms who own the same firearm). Nothing more. And your first response is to want to censor him? Are you for real?!
