New Home For 12" SCT

Hi All

Well i thought it fitting that my new 12" SCT should have a home of it's own to protect it from the elements when not in use, so with approval of the household it was all systems go.

It was always my intention to permenantly mount the scope on a peir which i already had, but wasn't to keen to leave it outside all the time, and carrying in and out is a feat on it's own.

So here we have it, just a couple of doors and roof and she's finished.

I designed the building, so that it could move along two rails and be easily pushed out of the way when i want to observe.

It, the building is fully lined inside with plywood sheeting, and the walls and roof are also fully insulated, this will help with the summer heat.

The rollers that it runs on are two sets of devices that are usually placed under fridges so they can be easily moved from one place to another.

The carrying capacity is 300kg per set of two, so i have one set on either side, four rollers in all.

Although not quite finished i expect to have the scope permenantly mounted and covered by the weekend.

There is also room for a shelf on one side for any computer setup, which also will also be permenantly housed in the small buliding, as leads will easily reach the scope.

Anyway it might not be to evetons liking but i'm happy with it.

Cheers leon

Looks great - does one of the piers live outside, or does the observatory cover both?

Lee,

Unfortunatly, only one peir will be in it's own home, with the scope, the other one which is closest in the photo is usually covered, and lives outside.
I use that one for my ED 80 and Astro-imaging platform.

Boy o Boy, you don't muck around Leon. It was only the other night when I was there that you were saying you might build a roll off building in that spot!!!!

Geez, what slowed you down?

That looks great!

Excellent work.

Hi All
Well it's finished, just need to move the scope in and away we go.

I dont think the wind will blow it away either, and although it rolls smoothly, it's bloody heavy

Cheers Leon

Leon

just a thought - you talking about wind

do you have a locking device on the rail to stop the shed being blown (or pushed) back on the scope?

yes i know you said it was heavy - but you also said it moved easy

Yes Geoff, it is and will be well secured, even with a couple of padlocks to prevent inqusitive uninvited guests. (Burglers)

Looks great Leon,

So all we need is some bolt cutters and a trailer and we can deliver it to Rocket Boy fully assembled.

I'd watch that doggy Tony, it has a go at me every time I'm there!!!!

It is actually an Astro dog. They couldn't pronounce Tycho properly and called it Teeko!

Does it have a pit and the obligatory resident red-backs?

Nah, joking, Leon, what a job; you don't hang around once you've got the bit between your teeth. Good luck with it - I hope that it turns out to be all you expected of it.

John,

It has worked out great, and dose everything that i had hoped it would, it now has shelves, power and lighting, and the scope moves in tonight, as do the cloudes

Althought i dose not have much clearance when it moves through the door, once inside it can move any where with out hitting anything, so thats agood thing.

As you can see in the photo we have that ferocious watchdog to look after
it.
