Unhappy Goodbye dark skies

Well I've lived in a light polluted Brisbane since starting this hobby, but I've always had the ability to drive 3 hours out to Astrofest and enjoy a fantastic night sky.

Except in September I'm moving to Rotterdam.

Where's Rotterdam some of you may ask? Well look at the attached picture? See that REALLY BIG AND REALLY BRIGHT section in the Netherlands? Rotterdam's right in the middle of it.

:sadeyes :

On the up side I think this move justifies spending more money on a decent camera and starting narrowband imaging.

Well maybe not. Anyone want to buy a telescope?

Time to shelf everything and take up another hobby for the time being.

Don't despair, it's not that bad
Your nearest Dark Sky Reserve is here:

http://darksky.org/idsp/reserves/westhavelland/
http://www.sternenpark-havelland.de/index.html

https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/S...5!2d51.9244201

Worth incorporating in a trip to Berlin. Many other spots much closer than that too, but the further east, the better the weather.

Well assuming your going willingly, there must be some sort of upside to the move, or at least it seemed like a good idea at the time.
As someone who made a number of other side of the world moves I can sympathise. What you don't want is to wake up one day at 70 years old and wonder why you wasted x amount of years doing this or that when you could have been doing what you wanted to do.

Precisely!

Yes I got the opportunity via work to relocate. They say permanent relocation, but I anticipate doing this for a few years, get the travel thing out of my system and then coming back to Australia.

I drove to Amsterdam and through Rotterdam just under two years ago. It rained all the time in early September. I think that clouds may be an even bigger problem for you.

Good luck - when you do get a good night, having a different sky is most interesting.
Cheers,
Renato

Interestingly, I might be relocating to The Hague later in the year...

From what I hear you won't notice the LP as you won't see the sky for many many months of the year.

Cheers
Stuart

I agree with Houghy.

Also Renato and Stuart, having lived in Belgium for a few years the clouds will be the bigger obstacle.

Yeah you better hide.

Sensor is already clean. I just couldn't do it until my flats issue was sorted out or else throw away some 12 hours worth of running chickens.

Honestly giving it some decent thought. But I think the bigger problem will be the lack of a sky all together, not just the lack of a dark sky.

Well I made it. I can see .... clouds.... and rain :-( On the up side I think water is much cheaper here than in Brisbane.
