First Aurora for me

Went to the You Yangs Regional park last night and got an unexpected surprise. No notification on my Aurora phone app, just pulled over on the way home to take a photo of an old ruined building and saw something in the sky! The strong bands only lasted about 5 minutes (from when I first saw them), but the glow is in a lot of my photos spanning a few hours.
First 2 pictures are 1am Sunday 16/8, last picture earlier at 10:30pm Saturday 15/8.

It's a bit exciting when you get one. Every time I have had alerts this past 8 months, the clouds rolled in. very frustrating.
Such a shame about the city lights, without them it would have looked stronger.
Still, well done.

Trevor

It was the first time I'd been there at night and didn't realize how close it is to Geelong. Earlier in the night I did a 2 shot panorama with the city at the bottom and in the 3" LCD screen thought that the glow was just city lights!

Well done especially with the geelong lights. Where is the old ruins? I did some scouting out that way a while ago. Always thought the lights of geelong might get in the way

This is only a few kms from the main gate towards Melbourne/Little River, just sitting in a farmers front paddock. I was standing right up against his barbed-wire fence with a single electric wire in there as well.
You Yangs is ok but if you want dark skies just as close to Melbourne, Cape Schanck is better. I was after some nice rocks in the foreground on this trip but mainly got Geelong glow.
