Western Victorian Landscape from Mt Arapiles

Photo taken on top of Mt Arapiles in Western Victoria. There were thunderstorms forming in the distance and we soloed Tiptoe Ridge, a grade 5 100 meter climb in one of Australia's most popular climbing destinations.

Processed to bring out the green colours of the landscape and blue colours of the sky. Has made the image look more like a painting rather than a photo, but the colours when the image was taken were amazing even to the human eye.

Unfortunately even the website version does not do this image full justice and really need to view the 4.5meg original.

Taken with a Canon Powershot S80 (8 meg pixel) camera, ISO 50, f/8, at equiv 28mm lens setting.

Enjoy!

John.

Great landscape John,
your right it does look more like a painting than a picture, very surreal.

cheers

That's a great view John!

I intend to go observing at Mt.Arapiles one night. It is (supposedly) one of the darkest places in Australia due to the low-reflective soil in the area.

Australia Telescope was originally planned to be built at Mt.Arapiles, but due to political pressure it was built nearer to Canberra.

Nice one John! I'm yet to explore that part of Victoria. "Only" about 300km from Melbourne.

Here is a photo from chockstone.org of the same landscape: http://www.chockstone.org/Arapiles/MitreRock1l.JPG
Quite a contrast next to your photo, John.

Thanks for the comments guys.

That's really interesting. Sure would have been a better site than Mt Stromlo in terms of light pollution. There is a car park and camping spot up on top of Mt Arapiles actually, and although Horsham is 25 kms away I am sure that for most of the sky it wont be a problem as the next big city is Adelaide!
I should really get my act together and take my scope out there and combine two of my hobbies. Climb during the day and observe at night!

Hey Everyone,

I'll be in Melbourne at the end of October/beginning of November and want to go to Mt Arapiles - to go climbing. Anyone interested? I climb grade 10 - 20.

Depending on gear carrying capacity, I might also bring a small telescope....

Hi Suzy,

I am always hooking up with new people to go climbing with.

Drop me a PM and we can hook up if you like.

Will you have transport whilst you are in Melbourne?
